You can capture LOCAL channels over the firewire port. The national feeds appear to be encrypted with 5c.
I did a quick capture of channel 8 and 801 this morning, and they both worked fine. When I tried HDNet or some of the other nationals... No go.
So, I guess we will have to go through all the channels and find out which ones are in the clear.
I'll put up a few screenshots of HD captures once some decent HD material comes on the locals tonight. A screen cap of the morning news (upconverted SD) is rather pointless. The HD is 1920x1088 though. |

The Mits Netcommand TV's all run Java. |

Re: [TV] The 1394 (Firewire) ports DO work on FIOS STB Are you guys capturing to your computer or have you tried extending the DVR recording space using an external hard drive enclosure? |

Woof WoofI Miss Brother Iz join:2004-09-01 Keller, TX | Capping to computer. I have no hopes at all that it will talk to a USB/Firewire HD...
What the heck, I have a 1TB drive sitting next to me, I'll take it home to try. |
|
1 edit | Yeah, I had tried that the same day I had it installed. I tried HDNET and I think Discovery HD, but no go. It looks like the 5C encryption is set for the national channels, as you said. You must have a device that will recognize the 5c encyption and allow you to record this (depending on what the 5c setting are for that show/channel). At this point I believe only a DVHS deck has that. |

Yes, at this point we are trying to capture to a computer, but not having any luck, except on local channels due to the 5c encryption.
As far as extending the hard drive space for the STB, my STB does not have any SATA connectors on it, like the DCT-6412 phase III does. |

Here are a couple Jay Leno screen caps. This is capped from the 1394 port while playing the recorded monologue from the DVR. |

Re: [TV] The 1394 (Firewire) ports DO work on FIOS I have recorded shows from DiscoveryHD and other national HD shows without any issues. Here is what I did. Record the shows to the on-board DVR, replay the shows from the DVR, record the replay to my computer. Works out great!
Of course, my experience has been thorugh the Comcast Motorola box and not the Verizon Motorola box. I am eagerly awaiting for FiOS TV service in my area. |

Yeah, with Comcast in the past, I was able to record everything, but one day I think they finally enabled the 5C encryption and was no longer able to do it.
I am sure one of us will give it a try and see if we can record from a DVR'ed program to our computer. My bet is that it still will not work, as we have not eliminated the 5C issue. |

 | RScottyL, Good point...I believe 5C is not enable on my Comcast box... |
