Qwest DSL - terrible xbox live performance

Hi,

I recently moved into a new place and got Qwest DSL (the best speed 3-5 meg down I believe). I have an actiontec gt-701.

My internet browsing is pretty speedy, and speed tests here on BBR show 300K-400K downloads. However, gaming in Xbox Live is laggy. I'll usually start out just fine but after playing for a few minutes I'll begin to lag horribly.

I'm a bit upset as I bought a 360 and the 360 wireless adapter but I really can't enjoy online play if it's laggy. If my browsing and downloading fast, why can't I hold my own in online gaming?

Oh, and I also have a Linksys G router (can't remember the model number off-hand). Does anyone have anything I can try to speed it up?

Thanks!
Desistyle3

Make sure you are using the latest firmware for the modem.

Do a search on this forum for the dreaded "I" word and let us know if that describes your issue.

Interleave = latency. My Xbox Live sessions is where I felt it most. YMMV.

I did a search of 'interleave' and it does seem to be the problem. I've only played two fps games so far on my xbox 360 and they do lag. I don't know how to check my 'interleave' to see if that's the culprit.

Do you think I should call Qwest and ask them to assist? Any other suggestions?

Oh, and to answer AthlGrond, yes, I am using the latest firmware on my DSL modem and Router.

what exactly is interleave though?

While the dreaded "I" word can't be ruled out, I'd start with the things under your control. I'd try bypassing the router and wireless by connecting directly from the modem to the xbox via the ethernet port.

If it's much improved when using the ethernet connection, that would suggest something with the router or wireless function.

edit: Interleaving is an error-correction scheme that adds up to 32ms of round trip delay. It's set at Qwest's DSLAM, and at the present time it's quite difficult to convince Qwest to disable it for a given customer.

Are other games laggy for you or is it just FPS? I'm hoping racing games and others work fine....

FPS games should be the ones hardest hit by latency. Racing and other sport type games would be next I would think.

As dynodb See Profile points out wireless can add some significant lag all on it's own, I would try running a cable directly to the 360 from the 701 before giving up hope.

I'll try that and I'll also do the Line test here on BBR when I get home.

I don't think it's wireless. I've used wireless at home before and it's really fast.

Anywho, I'll try these and even call Qwest to complain. Any other thoughts out there?

Does the interleave only add the first 40ms extra hop time, does it add other delays?

It only adds as much as 32ms to the first hop.

and so it adds the 32ms to the first hop it is not going to go away it will always be there. qwest will not change it so deal with it or get some other type of broadband

This just isn't right. I'm stuck with Qwest DSL whether I like it or not. It's absolutely ridicolous that I can't play an online game and have a decently smooth game.

I can only get DSL in my condo so I guess I'm pretty much screwed. Thanks Qwest!!!

have you done any troubleshooting at all yet or are you just going to jump on the interleave bandwagon and leave it at that? You need to at least try using ethernet with it rather than wireless. It doesn't matter how "fast" your wireless if it is putting even more latency on the line. Plenty of people use Qwest DSL for gaming and the latency doesn't effect them.

Does xbox 360 have a way to check your ping. on an xbox you can go to network settings connect then press Y. It gives you your ping and packet loss stats.

I know at least one person using Xbox Live with the 360 using Qwest DSL, and he thinks it works great. He only has the 1.5M service also. But I don't think he is using the wireless.

Note that the wireless issue might be the Actiontec, not the 360 wireless adapter, so you really need to try it hardwired. The problem might be dropped packets due to the wireless in the Actiontec not being great, rather than a latency issue.

Also, have you properly configured the Actiontec to forward the proper ports, or put the 360 into the Actiontec's DMZ?

Your symptoms can't be explained by interleave. If interleave was the issue you would not start out fine and then get bad. Interleave introduces a fixed short latency that some FPS'ers notice, but can usually adapt to. It does not cause low frame rates or jumpy/slow movement.

Isn't part of the problem the gt-701, people on here say the wireless part of it is terrible, thats why I went with the regular actiontec bridged to Linksys wrt54g, works great. Even though I can only get the 1.5 speed level.

Post some ping timings from the PC to the XBOX.

Whoa whoa whoa - I think my post should have been phrased better because it seems that he latched onto the "i" word without doing ANY investigation.

OK, I was pointing out the interleave issue to see "if that describes [his] issue" - not to simply blame it without investigation and then stick with that answer.

The OP should try it wired, with the latest firmware and give us some type of feedback. Without that first, we can't even begin to troubleshoot the connection and offer proper insight.

Evidently, get the interleave issue out of your head for now and do some decent LAN troubleshooting first. If the troubleshooting points us to something else that we CAN change, even better. But let's get the basics down first:

1) Update your firmware (if not latest)
2) Wire your connection directly to the Actiontec
3) Try out the same games, keeping in mind performance at the start compared to performance later on in the session
4) Post some traceroutes from your other computers on the LAN to give us an idea of what your routes look like.

With than information, we should hopefully be able to point you in the right direction. Again, the interleave recommendation was for you to INVESTIGATE and compare, not simply blame and abandon. For your sake, we all hope it ISN'T the interleave causing this poor performance.

I haven't yet tried plugging in directly to the Actiontec modem, I'll try that today. And, I don't use Actiontec's wireless, I use a linksys WRTG54 I believe?

How do I set up the DMZ and which ports should I forward to the 360?
