| reply to obeythelaw Re: Verizon DSL and email and oulook express
It the problem reading email from the POP server or sending it through the SMTP server? Verizon does not block either port 25 Outgoing) or 110 (incoming).
It may be that AT&T does not allow off network access to email. This is a common restriction sending email. Since retrieving mail requires authentication she should be able to retrieve it regardless of how she logs in unless AT&T prevents off network email access. Is her dialup account still active? If she canceled dialup she will lose the account.
Since she is on DSL she should set up Outlook to use the outgoing Verizon SMTP server for all accounts. ISPs commonly block off network access to outgoing SMTP mail servers to reduce spam.

| well, i guess i don't fully understand your response. Yes, she did have worldnet but cancelled it. When setting up Verizon, i guess it added the appropriate account to express, but for some reason when opening outlook express, its looking for at&t account and not the verizon dsl account. She really doesn't care or want to "access" at&t mail but didn't want to completely remove the account from outlook because there were some emails she wants saved before doing so. i guess she really needs to have the verizon account setup using POP3? I thought all ISP's used POP3 and not SMTP. How should she be setting it up then? I'm guessing that Verizon automatically set it up after going through the setup cd. -- How many lawyers does it take to change a lightbulb? Three. 1 edit | Ok you have two issues here:
Outlook express is still looking for the AT&T account server to log into. Quick fix: Open Outlook Express, select TOOLS then ACCOUNTS then have her select the one that says AT&T or Worldnet. Select: PROPERTIES and on the front page at the bottom she needs to un-check the box that says:Include this account when receiving mail or synchronizing and that should stop the password message in that regard.
Second issue: She needs to repeat the TOOLS, Accounts, and then highlight the Verizon e-mail account and there is a tab which says: Use as default. She should select that.
Assuming that the CD set everything up correctly, this should fix her issue and will allow her to keep the old e-mails she desires to keep. |
