Wilkes Barre doesn't need to ask Verizon's permission to remove all the drug-addicted bums and beggars from the street. Why don't they do that instead?
If they want WiFi, they are just as entitled as a rich community. Have you thought that more ready access to technology and education might actually help them? Or is the only way to deal with beggars and drug users to lock them up (or torture them, you seem to like torture).

Indeed education might help them. They need all the help they can get.

See I'd be all for dumping the money they would spend on WiFi into the school system.

Philadelphia spent nearly $1 billion on new sports stadiums while they continue to have some of the worst schools in Pennsylvania and a disturbingly increasing crime rate. You would think they would be all for pouring more money into the school system (go drive down Broad Street and see how palatial the school system building is) or hiring more cops. Nah, they just want to waste their money on an unneeded toy network. Other "cash-strapped" cities in Penna. shouldn't be making this mistake.

Philadelphia is not spending taxpayer money - they set up a non-profit and Earthlink is assuming the financial risk.

Heh... you got a lot to learn about the way things get done in Philadelphia The only risk Earthlink is taking is that all the politicians they bought off don't end up in prison or jump to their deaths from atop the City Hall tower.

So you're saying that the city is spending taxpayer dollars to build this network? Do you have a reference or is this an intuition?

I thought you were saying that Earthlink was assuming the financial risk on the stadum.
The original post talked about the money spent on the stadium, not any money spent on Wireless Philadelphia.

My bad! I know nothing of the stadium.

I don't disagree with you about people getting bought off; however, it's always best to provide proof of such.

For example, people in Chicago talk all the time about the current mayoral adminstration's "indiscretions" and yet the current administration has been in power since 1989. Granted there are current federal investigations going on; however, there's little value in saying there's corruption, but much value in proving it. (if you're from Chicago, spare me the flames - I dislike Daley just as much as the next guy).
