Paint Shop Pro Tutorial for Avatars

[TUTORIAL=Paint Shop Pro]
Okay, this tutorial will work for most version of Paint Shop Pro. Lets say you find a photo you really like, for example, a lioness that is yawning.

First thing's first, you need to crop it. The more you keep, the less resolution the avatar has so crop it to just what you need. For example, crop the lioness to just her eye and mouth. Be sure to keep the sides 3:4 to 5:4 so when resized to a width of 40 pixels the height is 30-50. To crop, select the crop tool on the toolbar (in the upper left corner of the second image) click, then draw the rectangle.

Double-click on the rectangle after drawing the rectangle to crop it.

Now it should look like this. When shrunk, detail is lost and colors clash, so you want to adjust the brightness and contrast. On the bar that also contains "File" there is "Images". Select this and then you'll see the first choice is "Adjust". Select that and the first thing that will pop up in the next menu is "Brightness/Contrast". Select this. Up the brightness and contrast until the image is brilliant but still has okay colors. For the lioness, I upped the brightness 25 and contrast 35.

Now the image is ready to resize. On the bar at the top that also contains "File" select "Images". Next, find "Resize" and click that. You'll get a pop-up like when you were adjusting brightness and contrast. At the bottom, make sure "Resize all Layers" and "Maintain aspect ratio of ####" are checked. Go to the top and select the bubble for Pixel Size. Change the width to 40; the height should change automatically. Make sure the height is 30-50. If its a little outside 50, you can still resize it then crop out the extra pixels. If its too small or way to large, go back and change the area you crop. After resizing, you should have a successful avatar.

If you want a transparent avatar, select a brilliant color and color in all that you want to be transparent. For the lioness, I used blue. MAKE SURE THIS COLOR IS YOUR BACKGROUND COLOR!!!

Select "File" at the top of the gray bar. In the menu select "Export", then select "Transparent GIF". You'll get another pop-up window. First, select the bubble at the button for "Areas that match this color". The color should be the color you used to fill in what you want to be transparent! When you click this, you should see the color disappear from the sample at the right and a checkered background appear. The gray & white background is used to show transparency. Now click "OK". The last step is to save it as a GIF. When saving, only type the name without the ".gif" ending or else you'll get an error.

In the end, you'll (hopefully) have a wonderful transparent avatar!

If all else fails, ask and I will try my best to answer. Or you can just take an easy path and ask me to make the avatar for you.

Very nice tutorial. However, I get lost at the last part...
To make it transparent. There is no export>transparent gif.

I'm using PSP7. I'm sure it has it but it is probably called something else or just placed somewhere else. If someone could tell me how to do it I would appreciate it. Thanks.

I can tell you how I do it.
Open the image that you want to make transparent.

Click on "Colors" in the menu bar, then "Set Palette Transparency"

This will pop up:

Click "Set the transparency value to palette entry"
and move your cursor over the area that you want to make transparent(in this case the yellow background). You'll notice that your cursor becomes the dropper tool. Click anywhere on the background, and the value will be set. Then just click on OK.
Save the image as a .gif
This is the result:

Another way follows the same rules as in my above tutorial except in PSP7 they renamed it. Instead of "Export" > "Transparent GIF" it is now "Export" > "GIF Optimizer", even though when you click on it its the same exact thing!

Thanks for the tutorial Hey Ghoul.
Like flesh, I too have a however though.
I think it would be handy to discuss how you separated the portion of the image you wanted to keep (lioness) from the section of the image that you used as the background (original background).

Thanks for the help!

[This is actually Hey Ghoul, just a little too tired to go and login and then log out]
For the lioness I colored the entire background I wanted removed blue, pixel by pixel using the paint brush tool. There are other ways too. Using high tolerance with the fill or magic wand also removes areas of similar color but it rarely does a perfect job. It's resized to a width of 40; pixel by pixel is not gonna kill ya.

alright... i did this quickly so it's not very good. first, get a mask around the area you want to remove. i used a magic wand, then did the finer details with the freehand. once you got that around the picture....

Click for full size
then you press delete, making sure the background colour isn't used in the picture. then you should get something like this... then go to file > export > gif optimizer. select the transparent region as purple in this case, and save. hopefully it should be saved with transparency.

Good one Dr.Bombay

Using your instructions.. I made the other picture.

Also.. just an addition to your tutorial.. don't forget to select 'Optimized Median Cut' from the colors tab. It will enhance the picture more. In a GIF you only get to use 256 colors.
