| What are normal equipment charges?
There is a WISP just starting in our area and their policy is to have the homeowners to purchase all equipment needed for a link at their residence. Is this customary? What are the usual charges? They are saying I need a round dish or maybe a yagi for a point to point hookup with their 900 mhz system. I think they said it is good for a 1500 up and 1500 down connection. What would be the average charges for that connection speed? They are working me up a price so as soon as I know something I will post it. Just wondering what is normal. | The honest answer is: it depends. WISPs do it both ways. It is a business decision that has many factors, so your provider probably did there homework and determined what made the most sense from them in their market.
Connection cost also varies by market. I get more than my nearest competitor because he also competes with DSL and cable. I compete with the trees and distance so my customers tend to be willing to pay a little more.
To me, the best way to get answers to your question would be to contact your other local providers and see what their charges are. -- Scott |

| reply to oldsouth Many WISPs will charge the customer for the equipment upfront. This reduces the cash outlay required for them to operate. In my opinion it's a smart way for a smaller company to operate as they are never cashflow negative.
As to costs, 900Mhz equipment is expensive. It could be 500-600 plus another 150-200 for antenna.
As to monthly cost that will vary from provider to provider and market to market. It could be as low as $35 or up to over $100. |

| reply to oldsouth No other competition for them here. Just dial-up and satellite. I am currently on satellite, my equipment is paid for. I'll just have to see where they come in at. -- Hughes 4000CE-SRS-G11,1410-Host/XP Pro/AMD 4800+, 2 Clients-Proxy on |

| reply to oldsouth OK, lump me into the "too stupid to read or remember category"... I read oldsouth's post while at work today. I guess I confused it with the "want to start a big WISP" thread. Now, I am too embarassed to go post over there...
Merry Christmas everyone! |
