Re: Usenetserver giving "special offer" to us....

i still recommend newshosting.com
unlimited for $15 USD ($18CAD) a month.

they keep getting better. i've had them for about a year now. every month or so they increase retention. speed is always great and maxes out my 6mbits unless they are having problems. i've never had them completly down but when they are having issues, speeds drop to around 200kbytes/sec.

@cable.rogers
if i subscribe to newshosting.com, are those uploads/downloads counted towards my Rogers' cap?

Yes they are. Any traffic in or out of your modem counts towards the cap.

Hi all, I had downgraded from Rogers cable Express ($44.95) to Lite ($34.95), save $10 and signed up with Newshosting @ US$14.95 per month unlimited with 8 connections but D/L speed steady at 47 KB/s. When with Rogers- Express(Giganews), D/L speed was around 60KB/s and limited to 2 concurrent connections. Overall very satisfied with Newshosting- recommended highly and you get instant signup without any delay. You just needs to reconfigure your newsreader (I am using Grabit Ver 1.5.3 Beta (Bilid 909)and life is back to normal except a few $s more every month. Worth it, if you cannot live without the newsgroups. LOL.

I hope you understand that your lower speed is because you are on Lite. Which capped you around 48 KB/s download, total.

If you were still on Express, your download speed should be around 370 KB/s area.

If you are on Extreme, it would be, nearly 700 KB/s. Which is where I am, also with Newshosting.

With Express, my D/L speed (for newsgroup) was 60 KB/s and restricted to 2 connections after Rogers switched over to Giganews. Prior to that it was 300 KB/s and 4 to 6 connections so that's why I downgraded to the Lite as Rogers was "squeezing" on the speed. I am in Scarborough and one of my friend in Markham still on Express is getting D/L 60 KB/s and 2 connections. Wonder any one else is having a similar connection speed though my speed check cable broadband test is at advertised 384 kbs and before that with Express I was getting 3 Mbs . So it is not hilarious and I am not laughing. I decided not to switch over to 3Web because getting a live "voice" or receiving an email response is like winning a lottery jackpot as their tech support seems non existence (athough I have my phone LD with them them for over 2 years).

In response to Roop's "i've never had them completly down but when they are having issues, speeds drop to around 200kbytes/sec." How you manage to get this speed"? I use port 119 on the "unlimited" plan and I only get 47 KB/s for all my 8 concurrent connections using the Rogers Lite. When with Rogers' Express it was 60 KB/s restricted to only 2 connections. TIA

dontbugme ...

Your maximum speed with lite is 384k bits per second. That is the same as 48k Bytes per second. That's the absolute fastest data can come down to you.

Before you were on express with a max speed of 3000kbits per second which is the same as 375k bytes per second.

With express the total of the data in however many streams you set up could not exceed 375kbytes/sec .... so 2 giganews streams would only use 64 kbytes/sec max.

So, you changed to newshosting which allows up to 8 simultaneous connections ... but because of your max line speed, if you were running all 8 simultaneously, you'd still max out at 48kbytes/sec ... or about 6kbytes/sec per stream. If you ran 6 simultaneous streams, you get 8bytes/sec per stream. If you ran 4 simultaneous streams you get 12kbytes/sec per stream, if you ran 2 streams, you get 24kbytes/sec per stream.

If you changed back to Express with newshosting, you'd be getting 375kbytes/sec ... and with 8 streams that would be about 46Kbytes/sec per stream

You can't exceed Rogers line rate no matter how many streams you're using.

Thanks for the insight. I will try again with another site in Scarborough (Markham Rd./Sheppard area) where Express is available and check back on your theory with Newshosting. As mentioned earlier, when I was with Rogers's Express and Giganews (two connections), the D/L was at 60KB/s and not 384KB/s results from two different locations (Scarborough at Warden/Finch and Markham at (McCowan/HWY407).

When you had express and used the *unpaid* services with giganews that Rogers set up, the limit of 60Kbytes/second was imposed by giganews on the basis of what Rogers was willing to pay for. They paid for a max of 2 32kbytes/sec streams from giganews.

In other words, your speed from the news server is the lesser of your line speed, or the speed from the news server itself. You can't get any more aggregate speed than your actual line speed.

Just verified with express. You are abs correct. The D/L is around 358 KB/s with 8 connections (newshosting.com). This forum has been a source of very useful info or me. Thanks.
