That said, I know of two ways to do this. Both of them are a pain to setup for this feature, and (while I use an SPA-3000 for other uses) I haven't personally tried doing this with either product (so YMMV).
However, an SPA-3000 (around $90 from Voxilla.com) can be programmed to do this. But you will need to have a friend in the other country that both has "high speed internet" and a local phone line to hook up to the SPA-3000. Also, the "phone line gateway" features of the SPA-3000 are amongst the hardest features of the adapter to setup (so don't say I didn't warn you). If you want to try this approach, I would highly recommend reviewing the LinkSys/Sipura forum at Voxilla.com first (to get some idea what you are getting yourself into).
The other way this is common to do this, is with a computer running "Asterisk" software. In this case, you would hook up Asterisk to handle both the VoIP and the attached phone lines. Again, this is not for the "faint of heart". But once you get asterisk up, you should be able to route any "phone line" you have access to (both physical phone line, and VoIP "lines") to any other location you have access to. So if both you and a friend in another country had *, you could share each other's physical phone lines (by remotely transferring the calls to each other over the internet). Again, this may be a pain to setup (and I don't personally use * myself), so YMMV.
And remember, while such "bypass" is generally legal for private citizens to do in the USA (at least that's my understanding as a non-lawyer), the same can not be said for all countries. So don't say I didn't warn you to check local laws first (if you don't want to get into serious legal trouble)!!! |
