Ok, I need some basic info that I have searched for and just can't figure it out.

I have cable modem which is connected to Netgear WGT 624 Wireless Firewall Router. I am connected from Wireless Router with ethernet cable to Desktop with Win XP home SP2 in bedroom 1.

I have a Netgear WG 311 T Wireless PCI Adapter card installed in Desktop With Win XP Home SP2 in Bedroom 2.

I have a Gateway notbook SP Home SP2 with built in wireless.

All 3 computers share the internet connection just fine.

Now I want to get a home network up and running so that I can share files and folders.

1. Do I need any more equipment? Specifically, do I need a wireless access point. Everything I read about this is very confusing.

2. Do I need to install a wireless card in my Desktop in Bedroom 1? If so do I need to disconnect the ethernet connection between wireless modem and pc?

I have tried running the network setup wizard to share files and folders with my present configuration and I don't think anything has worked as I don't see any network in My Network Places and I can't see drives or files on other computers.

I looked at FAQ's and searched forum, but have yet to find this basic info.

Thanks for helping

well, you don't need any additional equipment. try sharing a folder on each of your computers and then see if they show up in my network places. are you seeing the computers names anywhere in network places?

Windows Networking, and file sharing, can be a pain in the @ss sometimes.

Here's my troubleshooting guide, which starts from the bottom and works upwards thru the OSI layer structure.

If no help yet, provide "browstat status" and "ipconfig /all" from each computer, and we can diagnose the problems. Read this article, and linked articles, and follow instructions precisely:

I have the advantage over you - I wrote all that stuff over the past year or so. It was more fun to write....and write....and write.

Ok I have learned lots of stuff to try. But I may be making a basic setup error when running the network wizard.

I am selecting the option that says this computer connects to the Internet through a residential gateway or another computer for Bedroom 1. Is that correct with my setup, or should I be selecting this computer connects directly to Internet option?

Also, all three computers are XP Home SP2 with Norton Internet Security. I am checking all firewalls now.

If the router connects to the cable modem, and all computers connect to the router (wired or wireless), you need the same selection on all computers.
This computer connects to the Internet through another computer on my network or through a residential gateway.
The router is a residential gateway.

ok,

I'm making progress. I can see the Bedroom 2 computer in Bedroom 1 listed in My Network Places. I can only see the computer in MNP and then only when I select show Workgroup Computers. If I click on it I get no access errors.

And I can't see bedroom 1 from bedroom 2.

I have run the Network wizard in Norton Internet Security on both and made sure that I turned off Windows Firewall on both computers.

Any ideas, I think I'm close!!

OK, first go thru the short troubleshooting guide, and make absolutely sure there's no firewall, or other protective software causing problems. That's seriously 50% of the problems.

Then provide "browstat status" and "ipconfig /all" from each computer, so we can start the diagnosis. Read this article, and linked articles, and follow instructions precisely:

Do a brief eyeball of the "browstat status" and "ipconfig /all", based upon these articles. Then post here.

I used the Network troubleshooter and it told me to change Computer Names and reboot so I did. Troubleshooter still prompts me to change computer name (I don't know if it does that by default or is really detecting an issue) Reran browstat and ipconfig and posted below. Noticed that the browstat results changed on bedroom1.

I can ping ip addresses of both computers (ping bedroom2 from bedroom 1 and vice versa) fine. I can't ping my own ip address from that computer, it times out, but I think that is the way its supposed to be??

One other thing I have thought of is that my wireless SSID is the same as network domain (WAGNER) could this be the source of confusion?

Looking at both browstats, Bedroom1 can see both computers, but Bedroom2 can see only itself. What Network troubleshooter tells you to change a computer name, as a solution? Your original names were good.

Did you actually check everything in these articles?
»nitecruzr.blogspot.com/2005/10/i···ity.html
»nitecruzr.blogspot.com/2005/05/t···ood.html

If you did, let's try and enumerate your symptoms. Take the following code (everything inside the "#####"). (Please verify computer names and ip addresses - accuracy is crucial).

1. Open Notepad. Ensure that Format - Word Wrap is not checked. Highlight then Copy the code (Ctrl-C), precisely as it is presented, and Paste (Ctrl-V) into Notepad. Verify, and correct, names and addresses if necessary.
2. Save the Notepad file as "cdiag.cmd", as type "All Files", into the root folder "C:\".
3. Run it by Start - Run - "c:\cdiag".
4. Wait patiently.
5. When Notepad opens up displaying c:\cdiag.txt, first check Format and ensure that Word Wrap is NOT checked! Then, copy the entire contents (Ctrl-A Ctrl-C) and paste (Ctrl-V) into your next post.

Do this from both computers, please, with both computers powered up and online.

##### Start CDiag Assembled Code

Thank you for the very indepth education. I really learned alot from reading your troubleshooting guides. I solved my issue, and it was rereading your guides that made me go back and go step by step. I went back into my Router set-up page, and there was an entry for Domain, which was blank, and which my instructions said should be blank. But I read further and found a notation that for cable modem users to enter the Workgroup. I took a chance entered the name and voila!! I have a Network.

Thanks again, you have built an amazing set of resources and I appreciate your time working with me.

Well,

I guess I spoke too soon. I am having all types of intermittent connectivity issues. I have the network for awhile and then I lose it. I have run browstat on all three computers (I added my notebook) and I get varying weird results. Mainly I get an Error 53 on the bedroom2 and laptop. I really felt like this was a Norton Int Security firewall issue, because when I lost connectivity I would get it up and going again by rerunning the Network Firewall Wizard and configuring the location. I have not tried shutting down firewalls on all three.

I ran ipconfig on all three and found that ip addresses had changed for the computers (same ip range, but had assigned new addresses) bedroom 1 is .2, bedroom2 is .3 and notebook is .5

I ran cdiag script you prepared and it opened 77 notepad windows and 50+ command windows (file could not be accessed)I really did not think you wanted me to cut and past all 77 windows to the forum??

Any suggestions?

None of those symptoms are anything you could get from running "net view" and "ping" commands.

Your report is vague enough, it could easily be a malware problem.
