Activating new dsl service

When I got dsl in the past, I had to install SBC/Yahoo software from the CD in order to activate the line. The phone support people insisted this was the only way to start up the service but, since then, I know that's not true.

I have new service at a new location and, again, the order taker told me to install the software to activate the line. This dsl line is used for transactions with a credit card terminal only and no computer is used at this location. I know there is a way to activate the line without installing the SBC/Yahoo software but I don't recall how to do this. Can someone point me to a link or instructions on what to do?

I'm lying a little bit in the paragraph above. There is a computer/cash register on site and I can use it for communication but I will not install any SBC software on it for fear of what problems that may cause (and has caused in the past. This computer will not be connected to the dsl line).

Thanks.

That looks familiar but it gets me nowhere. I don't see anything to click on, where to send it, unless it's hidden somewhere.

Well, I take that back. SBC apparently only uses old, buggy Internet Explorer and doesn't work with modern browsers like Firefox or Opera, which is all I use. With IE I see the accept buttons, etc. That is probably what I want. Thanks.

I'm using FF but I don't see any of the "accept" buttons at the bottom. I had to use IE. Do you see the buttons?

I had the same issue with Firefox and had to use IE to register my service too.

Yeah, I just looked at the javascript for the site and it's not valid code. Plus, it looks a little like it was written for IE only so it might not work anywhere else either.

Seems to look just fine in FF to me.

Then it must have something to do with my web developer tools. I found that if I turn off CSS for the page I see the buttons.

Ok, went through the registration process but got to the end where it verifies my new email, wants me to click a button so it can set my "Yahoo email" setup but gives me an error that it can't continue because, of course, I didn't install all that stuff. But that's OK because it said it confirmed the email address and account etc.

Where do you go to check your email? I have another dsl line with email associated with it but don't remember where to go to check that, as if I really remember that email address/password anyway.

To view your email via the web, you can access it at »www.sbc.yahoo.com

There are also help files once you login to walk you through how to set your email up through outlook....

I always use this site instead: »www.mail.yahoo.com

I have my yahoo and sbcglobal accounts merged so I don't know if it will let you go in through there. You have to use username@sbcglobal.net I know. I don't really care for all the jazz found on the other site, I just want my mail.

Those don't work because they're looking for a Yahoo ID and I didn't sign up for one.
