| reply to Edit This A few months ago, I started experimenting with sharpening in L*a*b mode. As I read various boards regarding this technique, I found some concerns about double conversions and potential image degradation, i.e. RGB > L*a*b >RGB.
There are a few threads at dgrin.com and dpreview.com (mostly centered around L*a*b sharpening, not image punchup).
Please don't take this as me being a naysayer, just thought it fair to point out that what you may gain on one end of the equation, you may lose on the other end. regards, Bryon -- No man is an island, though you could strive to be a peninsula... |

| reply to jfgnet said by jfgnet :From Photoshop Help quote: The Lab Color mode has a lightness component (L) that can range from 0 to 100. In the Adobe Color Picker, the a component (green-red axis) and the b component (blue-yellow axis) can range from +127 to 128. In the Color palette, the a component and the b component can range from +127 to 128. You can use Lab mode to work with Photo CD images, edit the luminance and the color values in an image independently, move images between systems, and print to PostScript Level 2 and Level 3 printers. To print Lab images to other color PostScript devices, convert to CMYK first. Lab images can be saved in Photoshop, Photoshop EPS, Large Document Format (PSB), Photoshop PDF, Photoshop Raw, TIFF, Photoshop DCS 1.0, or Photoshop DCS 2.0 formats. You can save 48‑bit (16‑bits-per-channel) Lab images in Photoshop, Large Document Format (PSB), Photoshop PDF, Photoshop Raw, or TIFF formats. Note: The DCS 1.0 and DCS 2.0 formats convert the file to CMYK when opened. Lab color is the intermediate color model Photoshop uses when converting from one color mode to another.
Thanks for that but quite honestly, I still don't understand what it's use is. Why would you change from one color mode to another for instance? -- My Gallery Formerly Nezmo |

For some reason it did not put the captions in. First image is the original. Second is the Lab color. Third is curves. |

| reply to Edit This You can experiment with other channels and blending modes. Here are some examples of an image I worked with. Note the blending modes and different LAB channels I used. Original | LABBED | Original | LABBED and Lower Red |
I tried the trick out on a couple of nighttime fireground shots. It brought out some of the colors in the ladder truck picture quite well.
It really didn't do much for the picture of the front of the fire truck (different fire). I lowered the red level in the picture and that really made it look better.
I have to agree, however, the effect primarily appears to be a contrast and brightness change. Does the Overlay serve to increase the saturation of the colors? -- The funny thing about firemen...night and day they're always firemen |
