Do you ever see any Evening Grosbeaks around? I've always wanted to see that species...
Yup, I dont usually see them until late winter, early spring. Here are some that visited my feeder last spring.

Nice photographs McFly See Profile! I have no personal experience with separating the two Redpoll species, but I agree that this is a Common. An slightly paler coloration and stubbier bill would be the features to look for in a Hoary Redpoll, but all my guides mention the difficulty in telling the two species apart. I've been back in the Midwest for a few days and have been chasing scores of Dark-eyed Juncos around again. Do you ever see any Evening Grosbeaks around? I've always wanted to see that species...

Ah yes, I like these birds. I am a lot like you too Nezmo. I get a kick out of seeing and photographing birds that I dont normally see.

Damn, you guys are good. I was just checking out "Peterson field guides" They are great books.

You guys nailed both of them. The first one is a Common Redpoll and the second one is a ""Slate-colored" Dark-eyed Junco"

Thanks for the help guys!!

The bird in the top photo is a Hoary Redpoll.

I haven't been able to id the bird in the bottom photo, but it sure looks familiar - like I've seen it before....

edit: I think grobinette nailed the bottom pic - a dark-eyed junco.

The top image is a common redpoll - probably a female.
The bottom image looks like a Junco. We call them snow birds because we don't see them here until winter time.

If you are really into birds or birding, Peterson field guides are a great investment.

Well since no one replied to my other thread to ID one of my birds, I will start a fresh thread. I have another one now that needs to be identified. I am hopping some of the bird pro's here will be able to ID these guys for me. Thanks in advance.
