constant internet disconnections

it seems like this has been an issue for a few peoople, but after browsing through those threads, i've just become even more confused than i am.

i am currently using a 5200 speedstream modem with my linksys WRT54G router.

the setup works fine except that it constantly disconnects, and i get a new ip every time it does so. some times as regularly as 3-4 a minute.

now i gather that if you set up a static ip in your router settings the problem should cease from occuring. if anyone has the same set up as me, could you be so kind as to posting a screenshot of what ip's you used in the Static IP section that worked?

i've also got my TCP/IP settings set to a static LAN ip so i can enable port forwarding. if i were to change my static ip settings to say 192.168.2.X, would i also have to change my static LAN ip settings to a 192.168.2.X number as well?

i've currently got my LAN ip settings set to 192.168.1.100-105 and gateway as 192.168.1.1.

could anyone help me set up my static ip? i would be eternally grateful!

You can't set a Static IP since Sympatico only provides a dynamic IP service.

That being said, let's try to figure what's causing your problem instead of trying solutions without knowing what the problem is.

Firstly, have you tried without the router and connected your PC directly to your modem?

If that works, then the problem is with your router (call Linksys).

If that doesn't work, then the problem is either with the modem, something internal in your home, or the service itself (outside).

Let us know.

I believe he is setting up a Lan IP statically, not a Wan IP. Static IP on the Lan side should be within the DHCP range allowed in the router. The router will accept the static IP and allow port forwarding. The other issue with disconnecting every few minutes, Deadpool is right saying hook up directly without the router in between and see if it still occurs...good place to start troubleshooting.

Lets start at the begining. You have a sympatico modem/router.Its IP is 192.168.2.1.Now you cant have a 100-105 IP because that dont work. Its either 192.168.2.2 192.168.2.3 etc(if your running it off a router with different IP's you need to set your static to the IP of the router range and the routers address's to that of the modem.) They have to be on same gateway as the device your connected to also.Confusing? yes.I confused myself writing this even thou i do this all the time

i have tried directly connecting the modem to the computer and it still does the same thing.

i have even gone to the lengths of borrowing my friends modem and using his stable one at my house and i still have the same problem which leaves me to believe it's got to do with the lines at my home..

should i just go ahead and call Bell and ask them to send a technician to have a look at my phone lines?

Call Sympatico and they will decide whether to send a tech to your home or not. This problem isn't necessarily in or at your house, it could be at the CO (Central Office).

@cgocable.net

This almost is certainly a line issue.

If the Bandwidth Capacitance is too high it will cause exactly this frequent disconnect issue.

A line issue probably is to blame, or slam in the frame. Once addressed you should be good.

I am having the same issue. Bell told me that my line was fine. Since I'm using P2P, I wonder if Bell is doing this on purpose to limit my speed.
