Parental Control

I think this is a Firmware problem, but sure it is a combination of Firmware, Hardware, and Other.
I have the F5D7230-4 Belkin Wireless Router.
I originally enabled the Parental Control because my niece was staying with us over the winter.
Well, long story short - it never did really work and I had to be sure to be in the area whenever she wanted to use the computer...
I just let the subscription expire. Turns out that even though it is expired, the darn thing is still 'reporting'.
The only buttons I have on the Parental Control screen are Refresh Account Information and Renew. And neither does anything. Yes, I even disabled my firewall on the PC and the Belkin router.
I called Belkin and the networking tech support line said '...we can't do anything...it has to be escalated...' and they gave me a ticket # 1950633 and said the people that handle the Parental Control server would call back.
Well, someone named Jason left a message on my answering machine at 3am one morning. Gave me a number to call back, 800.223.5546, ex. 2879. I called back at 5pm EST because they only answer the phone between 8:30am and 4pm PST.
After over one hour on hold, I got a very pleasant fellow that said, '...oh, no problem...yes we know there is a problem with the Parental Control database/server...it just didn't register right...I'll enable the account again and all you have to do is Refresh and then you will get the button to Disable Parental Control.' When I tried, it don't work... 'oh, it will take a while to get through the system... try again in about an hour...' Well, I did, and it still didn't work. Next day I called at a little before 5pm EST again, this time I was on hold for over 3 hrs - my cordless battery was almost dead (it holds 5hrs), and then their phone rang and I got a message that they were closed!
Well... I called the usual Belkin # 877.736.5771, and again hold time was about 20mins... when I got a tech it was the same story...'...we can't handle that...but I'll gladly have them call back...' Needless to say its been a week and now call back.
So, anyone have any insight as to what is going on with Belkin Parental Control? There is nothing on the Belkin site. I've searched with Google and all I find is irate customers complaining how Belkin s*#ks and Parental Control doesn't work - but nothing about how to get rid of the darn thing. It wouldn't be a big deal except it does not block porn sites BUT pops up at the most inopportune time, like when I'm trying to do my work on legitimate web sites AND it won't even let me bypass with my password (which I know worked before the subscription expired) and gives me a message that the 'Parental Control server cannot be accessed...'
I've seen some posts that say the company that really embedded this in the Belkin product doesn't even exist anymore.
I'm still waiting for a call from Belkin about returning the router for my money back or at least a clean one that I won't even bother to enable Parental Control on...
Of course, if I had money to throw away I'd just buy another router and throw this one away... I worked to hard for the little I have.
So, let me say in advance, any Constructive comments/suggestions/anything will be appreciated.

Have you tried a reset of the router, back to factory defaults?

I've got a lot of dependencies going on right now and was hoping that I wouldn't have to do such a drastic measure.
WEP key, a whole list of MAC addresses, etc.
If I have to redo all that stuff, it would take me quite awhile. Are you sure that a reset to factory defaults will work to get rid of Parental Control settings?

It should return it to just like it was when you first got it.Also what version is your unit, and what firmware is on the router now?

Version Info
Firmware Version
4.03.03
Boot Version
v1.03.09.t2
Hardware
F5D7230-4
whoops, v1112
I guess the key is 'should'. Know anyone that has had to do it? Anyway, if I have to, I have to... right now it is an annoyance. But typing in all those MAC addresses again...

Interesting. I talking to belkin right now and those poor people don't even know about this version, USA or European.
Can you use your router in the normal mode, i.e., DHCP server? What are you using for your DHCP router?

How 'bout the one your using as a access point?

whoops, sorry I misread that. You only have one Belkin, using it now as an access point, but used as main router previously.
What ver. is it?

Ok. I got to a level 2 tech - he did know more. According to him I 'should' be able to load the 4.05.03 and it 'should' leave my WEP key, MAC address list, etc. alone.
And, he assures me that it 'should' fix the Parental Control issue - reporting 'should' be gone...
I have to get up in the morning so I'll leave this for tomorrow.
By the way, did you ever have the Parental Control enabled?
I'm going to have a beer and try wind down for a few minutes.
I'll post my results as soon as I can get online after doing the firmware upgrade.

Ah, well I'm not able to bring the router down right now to try the upgrade to see if it gets rid of Parental Control Reporting... I think I'll have to wait till lunch break - everyone can have a longer one today...

Well, I have another problem with is upgrade now. I am trying to do a save/backup of my setting. Whenever I click the Save button, the IE window comes up with a Popup Blocker and then disappears before I can get the information on what is being blocked. I did get the dropdown and the options were to Download File..., What's the Risk, and Information Bar. Only problem is it goes away and right back to the Utilities > Save/Backup current settings screen. I know I did this before I upgraded to the 4.03.3. I've turned of the IE popup blocker, close IE, even rebooted. Still don't get the option to save the setting file. jeez, and I forgot what is was called last time or where Belkin put it.
Whoops, sorry... sometimes there is a fine line between home and work... these days it seems like everything is work...
Man, if I ain't one thing...

OK, found it. It was in IE Security tab, Internet Zone, File Downloads, Automatically prompt was set to disable.
File name is user.conf
Now I have to go reset all the stuff I changed. Then I'll do the upgrade and see what goes wrong then... Hope for the best, prepare for the worst...

Rats, still have this stupid screen and no way to disable Parental Control Reporting. Here's what it says...

Utilities > Parental Control
----------------------------
Belkin's Parental Control protects you and your children/employees from objectionable content on the web. Parental Control comes pre-configured to block many types of web content, but is custom configurable to be more or less restrictive. Any web site can easily be set to be either, always blocked, or always allowed.

Your Parental Control Subscription is EXPIRED.
(Refresh Account Information button here)
----------------------------------------------------
Reporting

You are currently subscribed to reporting.
-------------------------------------------
Parental Control Renew
Belkin's Parental Control protects you and your kids from objectionable content on the web. Belkin's Parental Control is the filter that you set up. Now you can surf the net with your kids even when you are not there.

Your subscription is close to the expiration date. Please click to renew your subscription.
(Renew button here)
--------------------------------------------

The IE security setting mention in previous post is the one that was blocking the Refresh Account Information process.
But on that one there was nothing between the click and back to the Utility screen. At least this time I got this message...
----------------------------------
Sorry, our system is experiencing an unusual condition. We are working on the problem, and it will be corrected soon.

Please try again later.
Dynu.Email.1 error '800a0004'
Connect to smtp host failed.
/500-100new.asp, line 234
-----------------------------------
Looks like bad scripting too... no error routine for Connect failure... bush...
What a pain... guess I'll have to wait to see if still blocks me from getting to the modem when the modem goes offline. That was one of the symtoms... and a real pain when trying to troubleshoot the modem problems, cause if the Online light stays on (the modem) but I lose connectivity, I can't get to the Modems Configuration Manager screen, unless I plug directly into the Modem and that brings up other issues with not having access to the print servers (can't get real time hard copy documentation) and other physical access problems to the Modems location, etc. All in all a real pain. Guess I'll unplug the modem cable and see...
AND there 'esclated tech support' is closed today! looks like their smtp host took the day off too...

Well it looks like you will have to do a factory reset to get rid of it. I'm sure you don't want to do that, but I think it's your only choice.Just remember to only hold the reset button for only a few seconds,if you hold it to long you will go it restore mode.

Well, looks like Belkin is using Dynu.com ASP code components - probably didn't pay their bill...

Due to the physical location of the equipment it is really going to increase the hassle factor to get to the reset hole/button. I'm going to try the Reset to Factory Defaults on the Setup page menu first...
But now that I know were the problem is at least I don't have to waste my time asking Belkin techs anything more, and getting jerked around, etc...
At this point my modem troubleshooting is not as intensive as it was for the last three weeks - Comcast is the problem - not my wiring or modem... so now it is just an annoyance and I really don't want to have to type in all the MAC addresses again... setting up the other stuff is just a hassle... all the typing really inflames my arthritis and carpal tunnel... its a b#!*% getting old...
whoops again, thanks for the advice on the reset...

Got a call from Belkin while I was at my doctors appointment. Gave them a call and almost choked on my hot & sour soup when someone answered in less than 20 minutes... C. had me do the refresh thing again, reboot the router, refresh again. I gave him the error message, he didn't know why I was getting that... said that his monitor showed me giving their server my information (SN, IP, ver., etc.) but not getting a refresh request. He is going to send me out a new router. It was supposed to be an upgrade to the latest and greatest (enhanced wireless speed)- without Parental Control feature. OK. Five minutes after hanging up he did call back and said that it was not currently available without parental control firmware. But, he did offer to send a new router, same model I have, v4xxx, AND he assured me that as soon as the upgraded router WITHOUT parental control was available I could swap.
He also mentioned that even setting this one (the one I have now with the Parental Control bug) back to factory defaults would probably not work (to get rid of Parental Control Reporting)... likely the modem would 'call home' and just grab the Parental Control Settings again.
Anyway, once I get the replacement I will try just to see... I have to reset it anyway and try to erase my WEP, password, MAC's, etc. No telling where it will go when I RMA it and send it back... course I could just 'accidentally' drop it (or drop something on it)... blame it on the shipper... just kidding - really...
So, probably be a week or so...

Well, I must have hit a nerve (with Belkin) - just got the new router today, over-night - and I didn't even ask for that, even told them '...no rush now because bottom line is I would really like the one with the updated firmware that DOES NOT include Parental Control...at all.
Well, I'll see what they sent and probably put it up tonight...
