 SpeedStream 6520 - what is RFC2684 in config ?

Hi everyone,

Just got my DSL connection up and running - even before the offical date which was tomorrow.

Nice, i made a new wiring run from the entry point to the modem, filtered the rest of the house right at the entry point (2 filters cascaded) and it seems to be working well.

I have a question though - looking thru the modem's configuration pages, under Home Networking Options - 'Internet Connection', I see something new to me.

The PPPOE connection is working fine, but there is also a '2684' connection? Which I had never seen before.

I see two connections there :

2684(0) 0/35 - DOWN

2684(0) 0/35 BRG - UP (would it be a 'bridged connection'?)

I turned ON DHCP under the options for this, and it doesn't seem to have any result?

Thank you for any explanations on what this is - jsut curious.

It belongs there.

It is so you can connect through it as a Bridge. DHCP doesn't work with a Bridge.

It's the new number for the old and obsolete RFC1483

Thanks, Doctor Olds!

Yeah, I Googled it, not much info for these devices. Just came across some good info, using Altavista this time. :P

Siemens Australia has a page on How to setup 6520 to bridge mode. Including setting up the RFC2684 connection and options.

Plus, they also have the full manual for the 6520 - It's a pdf file, here.

EDIT : removed link to Bridge setup as it doesn't apply to us.

Got my home network switched over smoothly to DSL, nice.

I posted links to the manual and data sheets back on 08-28-2005 here:

Bridge Mode is Automatic in the customized Sympatico 6500 Series. No setup (as in zero) is required or needed. The Bridge Mode instructions for BigPond ISP users in Australia should not be used on the Bell Sympatico 6520.

Doctor Olds, thanks again - excellent information, well organized. Nice to have documentation for the modem!

Good to know I don't need to setup the bridge mode manually - thanks for confirming that.
