How dynamic is the SBC DSL Dynamic IP?

Happy new year to y'all.

I just signed up with DSL Yahoo Pro and basically this is going to be my first time with DSL.

I've had Cable Modem for years and I decided to switch to DSL because, my local-small cable company which has the cable monopoly in my community was unable to fix the high latency (ping) problem that I have when I play online games, like the popular BF2.
The service with this cable company is 6000/384 which reads great on paper, but the high latency is what kills me. They subcontract Internet connection from other bigger company and so on. At the end it adds a lot of latency on the connection.

As an online gamer, I don't care how huge is my bandwidth if my packets take like 250ms or more to reach the game server, that why I'm gonna try the SBC yahoo DSL.

Now, even though I'm excited about getting this DSL service, I'm afraid that I'm going to lose one of the goddies that I got out of this small cable modem company service, in other words, I'm going to lose the Highly Static Dynamic IP address that I have had all these years. (you know what I'm saying?). Let me explain: Even though I've had dynamic IP, it hasn't actually changed in last 2 years which is nice since, I have a domain name pointing to that IP and few web services running at home.

So, my question is: How dynamic is the SBC Yahoo Pro dynamic IP?... And maybe a too late question, What about the latency?

Your IP will remain the same unless you reboot your modem, you loose sync for longer than about a minute or two (not sure of the exact IP lease time), or your redback/BRAS (the network gateway router) undergoes some maintenance or a reboot (I think this covers all the possibilities for loss of IP). Practically speaking this can range from less than a day to more than a month. If the network operations center you are routing through isn't being expanded/rebuilt, you might typically see several weeks with the same IP.

Depending on the speed package you bought, your first hop latency will range from about 7-8 ms at an upload speed of 608 to 10-12 ms for an upload speed of 384. The latency for the slowest upload speed assumes your loop length is short and will support a fast profile. If you are on a 384 upload interleaved profile, then the first hop would be about 60 ms. Additional latency beyond the first hop, of course, depends on the routing.

If you force a disconnect, you may get a different IP address if you don't reconnect within a couple of minutes. The longest that I have ever held an IP address, that I can recall, is about seven days.

Latency depends upon path; Fast Path has better latency than Interleaved. SBC tries to keep you on Fast Path, and will only resort to Interleaved if you are having a lot of line errors.

Latency should be 10-20 ms, or so.

As for your servers, you likly will want to go with one of the dynamic DNS services like »www.no-ip.com/
or others. That way your severs are always available even when the IP changes.

From personally experience I would say it changes about once every week to few weeks. The bad news is forget about quasi static, it is not. The good news is that Dynamic DNS service works very well and you can do it all for free. I have done my house and even set it up on my parents DSL and it works to perfection. I access both connections from a memorable domain name instead of an IP and it is all free.

Thanks for the replies.

I got another question: Is the port 80 blocked?

Well, since a lot of people out there do not have routers or firewalls, I'm for blocking some ports that are known for having vulnerabilities or just resource sharing like Windows NetBios port 139.

Blocking port 25 outbound traffic that is not destined for a SBCYahoo mail server also makes a lot of sense. I'm for anything that helps to stop the spammers.

I still remember when spammers hijacked my SMTP server about 5 years ago. It was my fault anyway. I didn't set up the SMTP service correctly and left the mail relay enabled.
