[BOINC] How to Optimize Boinc and Seti v5.2.13

Are you getting everything out of Seti that you can? Probably not if you are not running Optimized Clients. To cut down you WU CPU time is very simple and you can do it with just about any OS.

Stop/shutdown Boinc before installing the clients. These files are for Boinc ver 5.2.13

1. Back it up! Create a folder in your Boinc folder named "A Old Files". I use "A" so it will be at the top of the files in the Boinc folder. Next select all the files and copy to the "A Old Files" folder. If anything goes wrong you can always copy it back and continue to run.

2. Go to »www.guntec.de/Crunch3r/boincx86.html and download the correct BOINC Client file for your computer. Right now Crunch3r's client is the fastest client out there. If you are not sure which file you need you can download CPU-Z and run it to see if your CPU supports SSE or SSE2. If you have a CPU that supports SSE3 use the SSE2 file.

•Stop the running Boinc Manager
•extract the files in the archive into your BOINC folder.
•If you get a message containing something like "overwrite exiting files" select YES.
•Restart the Boinc Manager
•Run the benchmark test

3. Now to Optimize Seti. Go back to »www.guntec.de/Crunch3r/setix86.html and on the left side of the page select the Seti client for your OS. "SETI clients for x86" are the files for Windows and Linux. Select and download the client for your CPU and OS.

•Stop the running Boinc Manager
•Extract the files to, X:/Program Files/BOINC/projects/setiathome.berkeley.edu".
•If you get a message containing something like "overwrite exiting files" select YES.
•Restart Boinc.

You should see the CPU time for each WU decrease after installing these clients.

Now watch your RAC over the next few days and it should increase also.

:o may have spoken early on this, the wu's that are ready to run show 2:46 to complete, however the current wu running is is indicating it will complete in 1:46. dammm

If that's the case I'm off to work on the rest of the fleet!

Let me caution everyone about using the optimized BOINC client if you are running other projects with the BOINC engine. Unsure if projects other than Seti will like the optimization.

However, just about all of your speed increase comes from the optimized Seti client, which I've been running for quite some time, with great results.

Also, if you are unsure which client to use, run CPU-Z to find out which instruction set (MMX, SSE, SSE2, SSE3) that your particular cpu supports. It's very important to match the optimized client to your cpu, as the optimization comes from using the instruction set built into your cpu.

I used the ones for my Athlon XP 2500+ and the original BOINC was showing a estimated time 2:56/wu. Now I'm down to 2:02/wu.

Please note, if you have been keeping your project updated via Berkley, you might need to delete the current project files as they are a different version than what you will get from the site above.

I'll monitor it over the day to see how I'm doing!

Thanks!

This is why I love this place so much and keep coming back.

Great information! On our Pentium III, the time went down almost 2 hours.

I would like to see someone that says that they don't need to be a part of a team to run BOINC. If it were not for the team, I would have never known this was available.

Does that mean I can just update the seti client without updating the BOINC client? I'm running 2 other projects and would like to not mess with them as much as possible.

Our first work unit after the upgrade went down from a little over 11 hours to the current work unit that will finish up at around 4 hours, 30 minutes if things continue to go on schedule.
I'm a little confused as to why the huge decrease in time. Perhaps this work unit that is in process is similar to the fast work units from SETI Classic. Looking forward to crunching for a few days to see if this improvement will be the norm or if it's just a fluke.

I'm definately going to have to try this. My Dual Xeon 2.2GHz machines currently average between 4-5 hours each running Hyperthreaded.

You'll see a difference. I have six of my computer optimized and only have a problem on my seventh. It's an XP1800 and it doesn't like the Seti client. I have the Boinc client installed with an older Seti client version running. It sill drops the time but not as much as Crunch3r's Seti client.
