Cingular is playing catch-up, also deploying HSDPA (CDMA based, scary)
Why is Cingular's HSDPA technology being CDMA based "scary?" Cingular needed a solution which works "now." Their customers won't care if its CDMA-based, GSM-based, or smoke signal-based. They need a high speed data solution so they won't lose customers to other providers over this and they probably picked a CDMA-based solution since it would be easiest or cheapest to implement quickly.

It's cdma based but it is riding their gsm network not cdma.

It was originally designed for cdma but cingular shoe horned it onto the gsm network. That is why the higher speed service is not available.

What is scary is Qualcomm ruling the world of wireless communications with their closed, proprietary and outrageously expensive standards. Just like anything else, diversity and competition is needed and hence all the high hopes for a working and deployed Wi-Max.

Oh well, there is no hope for neither wired nor wireless decent pipes. We are all doomed to live in the dark age

So what if Qualcomm is making all the money? They bore all the costs of inventing it, why shouldn't they reap a reward for this? If CDMA sucks so bad, then some other company can invent something better.

CDMA was developed as a result of competition. Whatever replaces it will also be developed as a result of competition. If Wi-Max is a better standard (and if Intel doesn't license it the way Sony licensed BetaMax) then it will eventually replace CDMA if it can provide better service.

OH *whew*. I have been waiting for higher speed options on GSM, since I hate CDMA. The last hurdle for me on this is latency. ( I would want to run my home VOIP over this connection.) Can anyone tell me what kind of millisecond latency we are seeing with this?? EVDO is in the 500ms range, very bad for replacing home DSL/Cable modem.

Cingular's customers aren't going to be concerned about the details of the technology used to make the data service work. They just want it to work period or else they will happily use another wireless data provider.

Not only would that type of usage most likely get you booted, it isn't really what it is intended for...

I don't really see this as a replacement for traditional broadband only as something to use on the go. The price, TOS, Speed Limitations all point to a limited us mobile use.

Again, I really don't see why it *can't* be used as permanent place broadband access. The providers don't want you too, because they will make less money, and have to provide more resources for it, so they will fight it tooth-and-nail, but it will come, eventually. I am patient.

You might be able to use it as one in principle, but whatever vendors TOS/AUP will prolly shoot you down for the most part. I know Verizon's edvo is very limited as to what they allow, here is a quip

said by Verizons EVDO TOS :
Unlimited NationalAccess/BroadbandAccess services cannot be used (1) for uploading, downloading or streaming of movies, music or games, (2) with server devices or with host computer applications, including, but not limited to, Web camera posts or broadcasts, automatic data feeds, Voice over IP (VoIP), automated machine-to-machine connections, or peer-to-peer (P2P) file sharing, or (3) as a substitute or backup for private lines or dedicated data connections
That isn't even including on how it only unlimited access and not use, Use too much and bam, you get the boot, and I bet you would still have to pay the EFT.

Whatever. Eventually these stiff TOS's will go away. And 3G wireless will become a viable alternative to fixed broadband access, *especially* as non-fixed access options start to become more numerous, and competition heats up. Thats all I was trying to say. I am waiting for that day to come.
