said by GOLFnSUN :The cable card capability means it can be used with almost all cable company systems. The SATA capability means lots of storage for HD recording. And the multiple tuners allows high flexibility for combining OTA and cable or sat connections. If it doesn't cost an arm and a leg, I think Tivo may actually have a winner here. It may be a product that can keep them from going bankrupt.:D The only thing I hope is that some of these cable and satellite companies actually SELL the cards. Look at computer built Tivos like Windows XP Media Center. They have been waiting and waiting for cable or satellite cards to no avail.
Why don't the cable and satellite companies start SELLING their cards so things like this Tivo become a reality? -- My Domain Nightfall's Hockey and Life Journal |

I can't speak for all cable companies, but Comcast does offer cable cards to their customers. At least they do in my area. But they are rentable - just like their STBs. -- -- Join Red Room Forum My Web Page |

You are confused. Cable cards are not PC cards. CableCARD is a PCMCIA Type II card (like the cards you put into laptops for network or wireless access) that serves as an interface between third party tuners and the cable company.
Ask the PC tunner card manucafturers when they are goin to make a Cablecard compatable digital cable tunner card for a PC. -- Start a man a fire and he will be warm for one night. Start a man on fire and he will be warm for the rest of his life. |

I think the companies have all been required to offer them for some time now. Getting them to actually work has been an adventure for some though. -- \\ROB - a part of the SCB local network |

They're coming, but won't be usable until Windows Vista. Forget about CableCard with MythTV until hackers crack it like they did DVD. -- \\ROB - a part of the SCB local network |

People who cannot get digital cable obviously cannot get a cablecard since that goes over a digital system. -- You do not understand the glory of Wawa. |

They do not sell them, they are only available for rental for usually like $2 or so per month. The whole point of the cablecard is that it provides access to encrypted channels. They can only assure that people only access what they are supposed to if the cable company owns the card, to otherwise modify the card you could wind up in big trouble if you crack open the card or mess with it in any way. -- You do not understand the glory of Wawa. |
