And the multiple tuners allows high flexibility for combining OTA and cable or sat connections.
Where do the specs say that it has sat tuners? It has two QAM tuners, two ATSC tuners and two NTSC tuners. None of which can tune a sat signal.

If it doesn't cost an arm and a leg, I think Tivo may actually have a winner here. It may be a product that can keep them from going bankrupt.:D
If they actually release it. It was announced and demoed at last years CES too.

What do you have against tivo as a company? They said last year it would be awhile before it would come out. Personally I am guessing they waited to be able to integrate support for the next generation of cable cards (while at this time last year the current cable cards were just really starting to roll out.)

Of course this unit will come out. Having all the features of the hd directivo plus built in nic plus hmo/hme makes this a killer unit, beats the cable companies dvrs by 10 miles.

It's been nothing but vaporware from them about the HD box for years. They had a OTA HD box out the year before last, it never came out as well.

I don't see that this box is leaps and bounds better than the cable DVRs. Tivos interface is slow as hell and doesn't appeal to me at all. I've had a functional SATA port on my DVR for over 6 months now, and Tivo is finally getting around to it.

Actually TiVo said at CES 2005, that the product would be released mid-2006, and they are saying the same thing at CES 2006, so there has been no change in release date in the last year, which is a good sign. The whole problem with the delay is the cable industry and CableCards.

Actually the DirecTiVo (TiVo) HR10-250 DVR, has OTA HD recivers built in and it was release two years ago.

BTW, if you had a eSATA functionality on a DVR, what DVR where you using, one of the cheap Motorola, SciAmerican, or Moxi boxes, or a Dish DVR (which I understand are real cruddy), or one of the dead ReplayTV DVRs?

And if you have had one for 6 months, then we do know that it is NOT SATA II compatiable, so no 3Gbps interface for you.

And of course we know it isn't a DirecTV DVR, only the new non-released "HR20" could have a eSATA interface.

Yeah, so? Tivo users have been able to upgrade their internal drives for a number of YEARS with a small amount of computer knowledge, and with no computer experience whatsoever for at least the past few years from weaknees. A far cry from being able to add a whole extra box next to your tv for the past 6 months.

At least in the ool forum, when dvr discussion comes up, the general feeling seems to be tivo is the better dvr for sure, it seems the only people who really lean towards the cable companies dvr are those who want 2 tuners and hd, both of these things are taken care of with tivos new unit. The feeling in this thread seems to also be most people going towards tivo.

Yeah, so? You also void your warranty in doing so.

Sure, until they see the $1000 price tag and then they'll still have to rent CableCards from the cable company along with the Tivo subscription price.

That's fine, but the box would be pretty useless without DirecTV service as the guide info was pulled over the sat and required DirecTV service to active it.

Scientific Atlanta 8300HD.

Doesn't matter, the Tivo box uses the eSATA interface, which is the same as the SA 8300HD and the Motorola DCT-6412 Phase III. None of them will transfer at 3Gbps. SATA II doesn't even offer a major advantage over SATA I as the PCI bus is still the limiting factor in the transfer rates. The are few(if any) that break the 150Mbps transfer rate of SATA now.

Boohoo, a whole $1.50 per month, compared to what? $5 or so for a box, and don't even mention a monthly service fee for tivo, most if not all the cable companies charge a monthly dvr fee on top of the box rental anyway.

It's amazing how you could possibly know a price even though one hasn't been made public yet. Anyway, they are referring to this new model as their series 3 box, not hd series, not cablecard series, simply series 3. You can bet they will sell them as cheap as they possibly can since you can get a series 2 for $0.00 to $150 depending on rebates at the time. With hd and digital cable catching on faster everyday, these boxes will become the norm and cheap just like existing tivos sooner rather than later.

Per card. To get full use you'll need two v1 cards or a single multi-stream card.

Look at the price of the HD DirecTivo when it came out. One can use that as a good guess to the starting price. Look at the price the Tivos were when they first came out, upwards of $400 for the box.

And your point? It still will be marketed as a HD Tivo and nothing else.

So what? They'll still charge a premium for the box because they know they'll sell. What, do you think Tivo is going to sell them for next to nothing? Keep dreaming. They'll sell them for as much as the market bears, and $1000 isn't unreasonable. Go look at the price of the single tuner Sony DVRs. You're only fooling yourself if you think Tivo is going to be nice and sell the new Series 3 HD Tivo cheap.

Yeah, so? $3.00 for now, $1.50 once the nex gen cards come out when, later this year? Still cheaper than renting a box and don't have to deal with crappy cable company interfaces and slow ass boxes.

HD Directivo boxes are a different story, they came out like a year ago, and were for a very small market of customers who wanted it.

Look at the CES info, they are marketing it as a Series 3 hd tivo.

That is exactly what they do. Sign up for a year of service and they sell tivos starting at $50. No premium there, and no money lost, since a tivo is fairly useless without any service anyway.

HD Directivo's are starting at $379 after rebate right now, far cry from $1000 even without a rebate. You cannot possibly base a price on a product released a year ago. I'm guessing this box will go for $599 at release before $50 rebate just for buying it, maybe another $100 off for agreeing to 12 months of service. $449 would not be a bad estimate and would be within anyone's price range who currently has an hdtv set.

SATA II doesn't even offer a major advantage over SATA I as the PCI bus is still the limiting factor in the transfer rates. The are few(if any) that break the 150Mbps transfer rate of SATA now.
But not everyone is using a standard PCI Interface (PCI-X (which is 64-bit) and x4 PCIe), a standard PCI lacks the necessary bandwidth, so that would be crazy for SATA II.

At this point the Series 3 has not been released, so we have no idea what the released product will use for it final SATA interface, but there is the possibility that it will support SATA II if it is released by the 3rd quarter of 2006.

The Scientific Atlanta 8300HD is a very interesting product. I did notice that it lacks something that I use every day on my DirecTiVos, 30-second skip. In fact, I would be lost when I watch NFL football without 30-second skip.

BTW, the documentation says that the SA 8300 HD supports VOD, including subscription based VOD, and xVOD, can you confirm this? I have heard that there is a lot of infighting going on in the cable industry and multi-way interactivity is not wide spread.

I did notice the all of the SA 8300 boxes (HD and Multi-Room) support external SATA attachment capability. BTW, is there a size limit on the supported external SATA drive? I did notice that www.weaknees.com is selling Maxtor external SATA drives for the SA 8300 series, starting 1/25/06. I guess it depends upon what version of the SA software that is running on the box and what cable company it was bought from. Most cable companies have not activated the SATA ports, and those that have you need to be running the SARA software, not the passport version.

The SA interface appears to be a very basic interface and not very fancy and I noticed that it uses the 1960's TV Guide like grid, which I have always hated, but most STBs do use it.

Thanks for informing me of the SA 8300 and SA 8300 HD, and because of that I found the 8300 Multi-Room. These products are very interesting are worth watching.

I found SATA to eSATA cable to connect my external SATA drive to the SA 8300HD. Plugs in the back and the cable box took care of everything. Better yet, the cable from this place was a good deal compared to others. See
