2 edits | [TWC] NY Queens Flushing 11355 area packet loss is back If you live around Booth Memorial Ave area between Main St. and College Point Blvd, see map below:
And you have experienced slow Internet performance between 5:00pm - 2:00am weekdays and most of the time during Sat & Sun, that means you may have the same packet loss problem like others.
3 years ago we had the same problem. It took a huge effort to have all users in this area to join force and file complaints up to the level of NYC Department of Information Technology & Telecommunications. Then it was finally fixed after 6 months of packet loss nightmare. I hope we don't need to go through the same painful process again.
By joining force together again, we will get the line fixed sooner. I am aware DSL is still not available in this area, it has been like this for 8 years already. So cable modem is our only choice unless you want to go for T1 ($550 - $600 a month with at least one year contract).
This is what we need to do: 1.) We will need to gather evident to support our claims, so download pingplotter standard from »www.pingplotter.com/download.html
2.) Set your ping plotter settings to: "# of times to trace:" = Unlimited "Trace Interval:" = 1 "Samples to include:" = ALL "Address to Trace:" = 24.29.98.9
Do not set the "Address to Trace:" to yahoo.com or google.com because TW will say it is those web sites causing the problem. 24.29.98.9 is the last RR router before reaching the public backbone. So if the problem exists within RR network, then they will need to address the issue.
Run poingplotter during evening for a few hours at least and save the data set .pp2 (not just a screen shot of image). You may need to send the .pp2 data file to TW tech department for further research.
3.) Also when you experience slow Internet in the evening, call TW customer support 718-358-0900 and ask for level 3 support. If they refuse to transfer you, tell them you need level 3 to measure the packet loss percentage on your line and do an upstream/downstream signal strength test. Tell them there is a severe packet loss going on in this area, you will need level 3 to record all data and escalate this issue to higher up management.
Remember to ask for a case number every time when you call. If the packet loss problem is not going to be fixed for another 3 months, we will need all the case numbers when filing a complaint with NYC DOITT.
4.) In your browser go to »192.168.100.1 and you should see your cable modem diagnostic page, from there you can see your upstream and downstream signal strength. You may need to tell level 3 what the upstream is because they may not be able to measure it from their office.
They may send a technician to your home if necessary. Some people may have wiring problem inside their houses which causes the packet loss. However, if all users are experiencing the same packet loss problem during the same period, this is hardly just some individual cases.
3 years ago I told the technician to connect a cable modem to the main node for our area and used a notebook to run pingplotter right in front of their eyes, then they saw the real issue. Prior to that they had sent more than 20 technicians to my home and kept saying it was my computer problem.
I am sure they will be alerted this issue has come back if we can all voice at the same time.
The first screen shot shows a period of 24 hours, from 12:00am to next day 12:00am on Jan 2, 2006, red lines indicate packet loss. According to level 3 I had up to 20% packet loss at around 10:00pm.
The second screen shot shows a period of 24 hours, from 12:00am to next day 12:00am on Feb 6, 2005 (almost a year ago) and the line was in excellent condition.
Remember to post back your pingplotter graph here and point level 3 to read this thread. |

 | reply to MiDiMaN888 I feel your pain...cause I live in Flushing 11355 area.
I just tested my speed and it's 168 kbps (out of 5000 kbps plan)....wow so much for broadband!!!!
This has been going for months...
I'm seriously thinking about switching to Verizon $15 plan and sure I will get more speed than that! |

Re: [TWC] NY Queens Flushing 11355 area packet los It's the same all over. Packet Loss has been a nightmare in Houston, TX now for months, and there seems no relief in site. We can only hope that FIOS will arrive sooner than later, because RoadRunner sucks, has always sucked, and looks like at this point will always suck. |
|
 | Just like 3 years ago, the first thing for us to do is to gather evident. If all users in the same area are experiencing the same slow speed due to packet loss, and the pingplotter graphs look similar among us, then it is definitely not our home wiring or computer problem. So TW must address this issue.
The next thing to do is to call the support line and get to tier 3 support. Only tier 3 has the prower to bring the issue to higher up level.
When we have enough posts for the pingplotter graphs in this thread, I will try contacting the TW consumer affair department and show them there are users in the same area having the same issue.
If they don't resolve the issue, we can go to the city agency and file a complaint.
3 years ago the thread we had here even caught the attention of TW management, NYC DOITT was also involved. Then the problem was resolved almost immediately, but we went through a 6 months packet loss nightmare. |

 | reply to MiDiMaN888 Wow, I thought I was the only one having this problem. I have been reading around, and I have seen that alot of people in the 11355 area have been having very slow speeds. I am also in the 11355 area, and my speeds are terrible. I am not really sure if it has been going on from before DEC 20, because I was in college and I was enjoying my 10 MBPS connection, but since I have been back, the speeds have been 40-100 KB/sec during peak times and 60-150 KB/sec during after midnight hours.
I was annoyed and called Earthlink(Im pretty sure since EL and RR are basically the same, I AM having the same problems as others). Yesterday they sent a technician and he vagualy explained that I had a signal loss, and then he cut off the wire and put a new head and then changed the splitter that splits to my cable modem and TV. Then I started downloading, and to my freaking surprise, I was downloading at 580 KB/sec(4.5 MBPS). I was soo happy, this was in the afternoon.
I check the speeds again at 1 AM, and they were back to the slow speeds again, barely reaching above 100 KB/sec. I have tried everything from unpluging all wires, then waitin 10-30 minutes at points, and then trying to use it again. Still the same. BTW I am using the RCA black/gray small cable modem. I just wanted to know if i am an isolated case, as EL and TW are both claiming it to be. They say that nothing is wrong with my area and that this isnt happening to anyone else. Also my signal strenth through the »192.168.100.1 diagnostics seems to be fine. I really dont want to spend $45+ on slow internet. |

Re: [TWC] NY Queens Flushing 11355 area packet loss is back This round of packet loss started around the end of Oct. I have been using pingplotter to record the line condition daily for over 3 years and I have all the data to show.
The above graph shows a 24 hours period on Nov 16, 2005, the packet loss was high during the evening.
TW tech will usually say this is your own problem and not the entire area problem. This is why we need to gather all user packet loss information, otherwise we don't have a case.
* Remember to post your graph here. (Resize your graph to 500x400 and it will fit the page layout.)
Follow instructions in my top post and run pingplotter, and call TW level 3 for packet loss count in the evening, remember to ask for a case number.
The problem ususally happens during the evening hours, and most TW tech appointments are before 4:00pm, this is why they don't see the problem.
Also send me an email (click on my nick name on left), I'd like to contact you via IM for further information. |

 | This is what I go so far.
I will post more pics if necessary. |

 | Im getting the same problem here in Bayside, 11364 area. its been going on since around Christmas time. I scheduled a tech to swing by next week, im guessing he won't be doing anything miraculous? FIOS is available in my area, you think i should go for it? |
|
 | I really envy you
I would definitely go for it!
Time Warner NYC doesn't really care about its customers. |
|
 | yeah i made a mistake, FIOS is not available in my area. i mustve typed my phone # wrong. woops... now im sad. |

Re: [TWC] NY Queens Flushing 11355 area packet los Its true, TW really doesnt care about its customers.
I was just speaking to Tier 3 support rep, and he didnt do anything to help. I talked to an EL rep and a Tier 1 rep, and they both said that since internet is slow, you may ask Tier 3 to reroute your connections through a faster server (is that possible?), well the Tier 3 guys said that he can't do anything, but he DID admit that all the people in my "wing" are experiencing a disruption in service and it is being worked on over the past 3-4 weeks, and he said he has no idea when work would be completed or the problem will be solved. He said he could schedule a technician, but he probably wont be able to help, and that there is nothing more he can do. THEN WHAT AM I PAYING MONEY FOR? I should get full compensaton for this, but looks like TW doesnt care about its customers. |

Re: [TWC] NY Queens Flushing 11355 area packet loss is back raykim777: thanks for posting the graph, you graph shows a 10 minutes period between 4:48pm - 4:58pm , I have a similar graph like yours at the same period of time, see the red lines and packet loss percentage, matching pretty well!
I hope other users can post their graphs here, so we will have a stronge case.
alexinqueens: You may be on a different node, because I know where our node is and it is not reaching that far to bayside. But 3 years ago, there were users in Bayside area having the same packet loss problem at the same time. So I am not going to say this is not related. For us FIOS is not coming yet, and no DSL, cable is our only choice!
phlyjedi: Can you gather your line pocket loss data and post your graph here? Read my top post for details.
When posting your graph, enable all hop time graphs, better show a 60 min - 3 hours period. Also enable to show "lost packet count". You can do this by right click on pingplotter top table area.
You can ask TW to stop charging you until the issue is resolved, they did that before.
When we get more graphs here, I am going to contact TW customer affair department and hope they can give us a time frame when this is going to be fixed.
If you know any friends in 11355 experiencing similar problem, please tell them to read this thread and join us. |

By College Point Blvd two blocks from main street library. You can't get dsl? I check the prequalifier here seem like you can. I'm only 5000 ft from co. But i'm right now using Earthlink cable thru TWC. I had the packet lost problem, but they fixed it. |
|
 | htin11: Glad they have fixed your packet loss problem, you are probably on a different node. Still, try running pingplotter in the this evening and see, read my top post for instructions.
Remember to post graphs here, we will need some hard core evident to show TW this is not just some isolated cases.
Since this morning 8:00 am - this moment 3:41 pm, our line is normal, 0% packet loss (less than 60 packets in error) I have pingplotter running all day. But it will be a totally different story in the evening. Wait and see. |
|
 | reply to htin11 hey htin11. how did they go about fixing your problem? did they send a tech to your home or what? |

We have a severe packet loss going on now, see above graph for the past 1 hour period. Packet loss was 12%!!! Those read lines indicate the problem. This is why the speed is so slow, I can't even browse a site with heavy graphics.
All: call TW and ask for level 3, read my top post for instructions. Please post your graph here too. I need more graphs from other users before contacting TW customer affair or even NYC DOITT. |
