Microsoft way ahead in IPTV race - NOT!!

Microsoft has essentially locked up the IPTV markets by striking deals with telcos worldwide, while Siemens sits and waits
I don't see how that statement can possibly be made. The link in the BBR news item gives the lie to that statement. The facts seem to indicate that it is Microsoft that is playing catchup and not Siemens.

Siemens provides end-to-end IPTV solutions to more than 75 U.S. regional operators as well as many more worldwide, including national operators such as KPN Royal Dutch Telecom and Belgacom in Europe and Advanced Datanetwork Communications (ADC) in Thailand. In December, China's Shanghai Telecom Co., Ltd., and Shanghai Media Group (SMG) announced it will be collaborating with Siemens to offer IPTV services to a market that includes 25 million broadband users and 360 million television viewers. Globally, Siemens IPTV contracts cover more than 38 million broadband lines.

Yeah, 75 regional operators seems a bit hyped -- which negates any other point to be made. I travel quite a bit -- and I can assure you there are not 75 IPTV operations in N. America -- unless we include apartment buildings and motels (which means the statement is simply misleading)

I guess someone has "gone-long" on Siemens.

Myrio, which was bought by Siemens and is the technology behind Siemens IPTV, cites on their website 22 announced customers (see »myrio.com/customers/). If they announced 22, it's not a stretch to think they've got another 50 that aren't announced.

If they announced 22, it's not a stretch to think they've actually only got 10

Siemens has solid contracts in Asia, but not in the States or Canada, which is clearly our audience. I've made sure to specify that in the article.

Microsoft & Alcatel have locked up the IPTV market via contract with the biggest players in a number of countries. That "75 regional carriers" mark Siemens has been throwing around a lot the past few months to appease investors; it pales in comparison to deals with major telcos like Verizon, Bell Canada, and AT&T, who'll be deploying to millions of customers, not scattered thousands.

So they are way ahead in the U.S., UK, and Canada.

Karl I think the problem comes not from your clarification at the end, but the bit in the beginning about "MS has locked up a significant chunk of the world"

Microsoft/Alcatel have locked down all the major IPTV players in the United States, Canada's largest telco, the UK's largest telco, India, Switzerland, Italy...I'm still trying to figure out how this isn't a significant chunk of the world?

They esentially now own the telco IPTV market in North America.....
