F-in up my router due there throttling packets VARY PISSED OFF since there throttling is inter-fearing with SOMETHING I OWN and NOT ROGERS and thats not right since if I was to do something that would do some inter-fearing on something that Rogers OWNS I would get CHARGED by the police so the same should be for Rogers. |

ohoh @cpe.net.cable.rogers | reply to sbrook All of the sudden I'm downloading binaries between 1 and 1.5 Mb/s. I've always had a consistent 5.6 - 5.8 Mb/s, day or night and now this. It's making me nervous because checking speedcheck.rogers.com shows no connection issues and I'm downloading from it at 5.8 Mb/s. I spoke with techsup at Usenetserver just to see if they were having any throughput issues resulting in slower than normal transfer and they said they weren't.
Could this be the same type of throttling misery that P2P users have been experiencing now happening with nntp?
Anybody else seeing the same thing? |
|
 | I've noticed that it's taking longer to pull down headers off of Usenetserver; not around the computer enough to make a call on the speeds I'm getting for any binary downloads.
And while it's not the proper thread to mention this, I've also seen quite the spike in timeouts connecting to torrent trackers. I wonder... |
|
ohoh @cpe.net.cable.rogers | reply to sbrook OK, false alarm. It's not Rogers. I found an option to change routes from my IP to usenetserver www.usenetserver.com/route. Switching from WvFibre to any of Telia, Sprint or GlobalCrossing solved the problem immediately.
Guess nntp is safe for now |

Re: The Official Other things getting throttled th Curiously, on Jan 11, 2006, I noticed that downloading from nttp (NewsDemon) was limited to 350-400 KB/s using 3 threads. My usual speed is 540-580 KB/s near the theoretical max of my connection. Increasing or decreasing the number of threads by 1 had no effect.
I've also noticed that in the past 2 weeks, about 25% of the time, one of the download threads starts fast (180 KB/s or more) but then will eventually slow to about 4 KB/s. Killing that thread and having the newsreader use another thread instantly fixes the problem.
Evidence that UseNet binary downloads are being throttled? I don't know. But if Rogers is messing with a service I pay a premium for (UseNet) then they are crossing the line. |

 | reply to sbrook I've been experiencing problems with HTTP and FTP downloads and wonder if this is due to Rogers traffic shaping. These problems occur in both IE and Firefox, using different lan cards, and with/without a router. Problems are these:
1. Single downloads from a website work fine, but attempts to download multiple files concurrently cause the downloads to freeze.
2. Download initiates, but never gets beyond 100kb or so. This seems to happen most often with files ending in .exe (for example, I was able to download a .jar file from java.sun.com no problem, but could not download a .exe installation file. Problem appears to come and go: I was unable to download the Skype installation program from the Skype website on multiple attempts on multiple days, but after rebooting the surfboard modem & PC, clearing cache, etc, I was able to download the file via IE no problem ONE TIME. I've attempted to download the Skype installation program since then to investigate this problem further, but haven't been successful since that one time.
3. Downloading the Eclipse installation file (www.eclipse.org) and the download freezes at just over 40MB, regardless of which mirror I attempt to download from.
Are others having similar problems? My surfboard modem has numerous errors in it's log. I'm wondering if my modem is fried, or if this is possibly due to the traffic shaping servers? I'm experiencing the same problems with p2p that others are reporting. Is the traffic shaping also to blame for these downloading issues?
Thanks,
Ray |

Re: The Official Other things getting throttled thread I've found that I can only do two http downloads from any particular site (IP address) at a time. I've seen it happen with a few sites that offer largish downloads but haven't tested it definitively. If you start a third it freezes until another finishes.
Has anyone else noticed this? |

 | reply to sbrook I don't know if this has anything to do with all this but I cannot send files through MSN anymore, whether I try 4.7 or the latest. Says connection is blocked, contact your administrator or isp. Transfers over msn worked fine yesterday and has not all day today. Buddy hasn't changed any settings and neither have I. Could it be they're destroying that aswell? Does anyone else have this issue? |

What else is running on that PC? Any firewall apps? MS's own firewall? Has someone else used that PC and accidentally set the port to block? Maybe a router you may be using at home? |

 | reply to sbrook I can live with the whole p2p being throttled .. but my private im transfers which could be anything should most definately not be. I mean a 3 mb file that takes 5 hours?? I could walk it to half the ppl i know faster ffs. Nvm 56k .. 33.6 modem transfers were faster. If rogers' network is THAT bad maybe it's time the CRTC opened up the game a bit more and let in all the american competition. That is about the only thing that might (and i stress might) make rogers shape the f*** up. LEAVE MY MSN ALONE!!! |

 | reply to sbrook Are they slowing down regular old downloads too (from web sites?)
I have Rogers Extreme on one computer and Sympatico DSL on the other. The DSL is capped at 1.1 mb because of the crappy lines around here (so they say).
I'm having the same torrent issues as others, and as a solution was advised to try Bitcomet and port 1755. So I went to download.com to download Bitcomet. It started coming through at an average of 2.7 kbps and was going to take nearly 30 minutes! So I tried the same file from the same site, using Sympatico and it came through at 65 kbps (on my ultra slow high speed connection). On the Rogers speed site, my speed shows at around 5700, and surfing is fast.
Are they slowing down all downloads now? I just got Extreme last week as a backup (my home business is highly dependent on a reliable internet connection with which i can ftp large files).
I wouldnt really have thought they might be slowing down or regulating our download speeds if I didnt have something to compare it with.
(By the way, Bitcomet and port 1755 did enable me to download torrents, at about half the speed of my 1mb sympatico connection, on the same torrent, at the same time -- but at least it works) |

Re: The Official Other things getting throttled thread I've noticed similiar things with my premium nntp downloads. They fluctuate quite a bit, with times just dying before starting back up. It seems like they are being stalled...
I've noticed it depends on the time of day as well. Late at night (2:00am) my speeds are consistently fast using the full connection. |

Some sites are really erratic and all over the place. So my thoughts are that it's far more to do with traffic conditions than anything else. |

Re: The Official Other things getting throttled thread i'm getting my 720something kbytes/sec in ottawa south. that's newsgroups and http. |

 | As I had mentioned in another thread, when I use BT (utorrent/bitcomet) my websurfing slows down to a crawl. This is even when I dont upload anything at all. It usually goes away after 5 minutes or so after the torrent starts.
I know it is the torrent affecting my web browsing because if I stop the torrent, webbrowsing goes back to normal.
I believe the network detects BT software and automatically kills port 80 latency. Yes, this even happens if I use port 1720 on BT. |
