 Can I buy my own DVR and have Insight activate it?

At $14.95 a month, it won't take long to reach the break-even point for the eBay cost of a Motorola 6208 or 6412 DVR (which are currently in use here in Louisville). If I were to buy one, could I just have Insight "activate" said box for a one-time fee instead of payng them once a month forever?

nope, the ones on EBay are most likely stolen or are off of accounts that are seriously past due...... Thus insight will not use them.....

Re: Can I buy my own DVR and have Insight activate

What information do I need to give them to see if it is stolen/past due, etc., or do they simply refuse to allow non-rental DVRs at all?

@insightBB.com
they just refuse to allow any customer owned 6412 6208 on any accounts

How to Get the DCT6208 / 6412

Motorola High Definition DVRs are exclusively available from Digital Cable service providers. Here are some links to major service providers using Motorola Digital Cable equipment. Please check with your local provider for availability of Motorola's High Definition DVR in your area.

My question is when someone is going to make a smaller box that resembles a small DVD player (or the older cable boxes) and does not heat up the entertainment center. Someone besides Moto has to be making these things...

About the only thing that you can own and not have to rent, is a cable modem. Anything else, and it has to be company owned. At least that is the way that it is here in Evansville, no one has made me aware that I can start selling DVR's or DCT's, and I have not yet heard talk of it.

You can own one of these, it has a built in DCT2000 and is the only legit item you can buy until the TiVo 3 comes out and it will have the ability to use 2 cable cards provided by whomever your cable company is.

Helps if I added a link...

Interesting, though I already have a nice Reciever, so that does not interest me. I hope to see more DVR/Digital boxes that use cablecards in the near future. I hope that the Tivo series 3 hit the market soon to spur more development. I like the DVR from insight just fine and considering how much tivo costs to buy and then get service it is not a bad deal. But if I add another HDTV I do not need a 2nd DVR and unless things have changed I have to pay another $14/mo for that TV ( unless it has a cablecard slot) Hopefully that will change soon.
