| ZAF problem
I have ZAF 6.1.737.000 and have run ZAF for years. Lately, for some reason, my laptop is having intermittent trouble being able to connect to the internet. When I stop ZAF, the connection goes through just fine.
ZAF on the wired PC is not having any issues. ZAF on the wireless laptop is hit and miss. I've deleted Fx from the program list and then given it permission when I crank up Fx again, but there's still no consistent behavior... I may or may not be able to reconnect. Then it may run for a while with no issues on the wireless laptop.. and then stop for no apparent reason.
I've disabled ZAF and enabled the Windows FW for now.
Has anyone else seen erratic issues with ZAF/wireless? Any thoughts? -- -speedy | | Cudni La Merma - Vigilado Premium,MVM join:2003-12-20 Someshire

| reply to speedlever Is this problem with a Dlink router?
»D-Link
Sounds like a timing problem. But you might want to compare all the settings in the laptop with the same ones in your desktop.
It could be in you ZoneAlarm settings, the wireless profile settings, the Dlink settings, or your Windows services.
Sounds something like the timing problem funchords sometimes mentions. | | speedlever

I'm not sure how to interpret some of the log msgs. For instance.. around the time I was having problems this morning I see this:
[info]The Computer Browser service entered the stopped state.
[error]The Computer Browser service terminated with the following error: This operation returned because the timeout period expired.
[info]The TrueVector Internet Monitor service entered the stopped state.
etc. The true vector stop may have been when I shut down ZAF... hard to remember now. -- -speedy | | Marilla I Am My Own Arbiter Premium join:2002-12-06 Belpre, OH | Yes; the True Vector service stopping is likely due to you stopping Zone Alarm.. | reply to speedlever After a week of operations with no problems, I again experienced a problem. I checked into a hotel two days ago and had no problem until their broadband connection went down for about 12 hours.
And now, ever since they got the problem fixed, I can't connect as long as ZAF is operational. When I start the MS FW and kill ZAF, I can connect with no problem.
I don't see any entries in the Event Viewer that appear related.

I'm now back home and the laptop comes up just fine with ZAF.
Generic Host Process is set to allow/allow/allow/block. What's that last ASK in your msg?
Should my wireless and NIC adapters (on the laptop) be set to Internet Zone rather than Trusted? That's the way mine are set (internet zone, I mean).
The latest ZAF log is clean. The one I posted above looks like it had permissions trouble... but I wouldn't know where to begin to fix that.
One thing I've noticed is that if I enable the Windows FW/ICS service, it seems to know whether I have ZAF running or not. IE, if ZAF is running, the Windows firewall will be disabled.. and vice-versa. Also, if I reboot (after leaving the Windows firewall enabled), the service comes up stopped on the reboot. ZAF is set to start automagically on startup. I didn't know the MS FW was that intelligent. -- -speedy | | La Luna Surviving Ashraful Premium join:2001-07-12 Warwick, NY clubs:

| Good question. No, I'm not trying to run them concurrently. I start one and shut the other one down. What I've noticed is that if I crank up ZAF after running the MS FW, when I go to turn off the MS FW, I find it is already checked disabled. And when I check to turn it on after shutting down ZAF, I find it already checked on.
Of course now that you mention it, I can't remember what sequence I've enabled/disabled the two firewalls. So as not to run with no firewall, I think I've left one running until I crank up the other one. I then shut down the other FW. (I think this is what I've been doing!)
Would this brief overlap cause problems? -- -speedy | | speedlever

1 edit | reply to speedlever I am connected to a hotel's ISP and have run fine for a while. For some reason, ZAF is again not letting me connect so I've shut it down and cranked up the Windows FW.
As soon as I shut down ZAF, I am able to connect just fine. I am stumped as to why this problem is occurring.

Just to clarify, when I go to a hotel and run into this problem, I need to run ipconfig and add the local DNS servers? If that works, it will be a work around to the problem. I'd like to find a fix, if possible.
My current work around is to shut down ZA and run the Windows FW.
Edit: I just cranked up ZAF (Windows FW shut itself down automatically) and attached is a copy of my current ZAF fw settings. Presently, ZAF is allowing everything to run ok.
Edit 2: And shortly after, ZAF wouldn't allow the connections to go through. So I shut it down again. Also, I adjusted the settings to Trusted for the wireless and NIC adapters.
