I'm posting at school right now so later replies will be from my username when I'm at home.
As for my question, how is MS Virtual PC 2004? I've used VMWare a couple of times, but it isn't free. At the moment I can get a free copy of Virtual PC 2004 from my university. I'm mainly wondering about security issues with Virtual PC 2004, how secure is it? Were there a lot of security issues, and if there were a lot of security issues were they fixed quickly?
Also, would it be recommend to use VMWare over Virtual PC 2004 even if I'd have to pay for VMWare? |

VMWare has better support for other OSes like Linux and FreeBSD, so if you think you might do a lot of playing with other OSes I would recommend VMWare instead. It also seems to have much better performance in my opinion than Virtual Server or Virtual PC. Given the choice I'd pick VMWare Workstation hands down. Now, if I got one for nothing and the other for $$ I'd probably go with the free solution.
Both will work. What are you going to do with it?

Unless I am mistaken, VMWare supports USB whereas VPC does not. I could be wrong, since I've been using VMWare for quite sometime and VPC may have updated its offerings.

Thanks for the post guys. Seems VMWare leads the way in that topic posted by Cudni  .
As for what I'm using it for, mainly to install WinXP so I can test software installs for added bonuses and if there are any added bonuses I could extract out what I needed into a ZIP, like themes for example. So all in all it'd probably be for just testing purposes.
NyQuil Kid , you mention that you think VPC doesn't support USB? Does anyone know if this is true or not? If it is true, does it support a drag and drop type feature like VMWare has? If there's no USB I can get by with a drag and drop type feature, but I think I'd need at least one of them. |

Do a FIND in PAGE for USB...as stated in the page:
"Standard USB input devices such as keyboards and mice are supported through PS/2 emulation, but Virtual PC does not support USB devices that require their own drivers. Virtual machines also don't see the PC's hardware video card as a native device, so you can't install your own video card drivers."
Best thing to do is check with the software vendor's product pages before posting questions. Google is helpful, too.

Personally I like VMWare much more than VPC. I think it handles memory better and is much faster. VMWare also offers a free "VMWare player" that will let you do most of what their workstation offering does, it does not let you create a VM but you can download many from the internet. If interested you can get the player here: »www.vmware.com/products/player/
There is also a free 30 day trial for VMWare to help you get an idea which would work better for you.

I believe you could also get the trialware, install your OS, and then use VMWare Player. |

Can any of that software simulate a multiple processor system?
For example if I have a dual opteron then can that software simulate a HT Intel etc? |

There is a setting however for telling the VM that there is more than one CPU, but I haven't played with it.....yet.

If you do a google search on VMWare player it will bring some information on where to get VMs. That is if you don't want to install the full product's demo.

The OS X version has to do much more than the PC version, since the Mac would be running a PPC and the Windows box an Intel x86 processor. The Mac version has to act as a translation layer between the PPC CPU and the Windows OS which is expecting an x86 CPU. That slows things down a lot. I don't think there are significant differences in the speed of Virtual PC and VMWare except perhaps in disk I/O when using the option to allocate all disk space immediately on VMWare (which I recommend, if you want the best performance.)
