Official Bay Area slowdown thread

Has there been any official word on any Bay Area speed problems? There seem to be several very active threads ongoing in the direct forum, and people continue to have problems. I myself have had my dsl line for several years now, and this has really been the only time that I've seen a problem like this persist for this long. Just looking for some official information.

Re: Anything official concerning Bay Area slowdowns?

same here. I speak highly of pacbell/sbc. Never had any issues with them for 6/7 years until now.

I have a trouble ticket open, hopefully something will happen.

they should atleast update the system status page or something.

Re: Anything official concerning Bay Area slowdown

Yeah, these nightly slowdowns have been going on for a while now and it's really annoying. My DSL has been great for the last few years until this prolonged speed problem. Tried contacting SBC, but all I ever get is the try to restart the modem, reboot this or that, and when's all said and done I get a "Ah well sorry, but you're still within your range (albeit right at the minimum) so we really don't have to fix the problem". Frustrating to say the least.

Re: Anything official concerning Bay Area slowdowns?

I've enjoyed speeds of around 600Kb since the expert plus package a while back, but now I'm seeing speeds around 200 or less, even 80 last night! I just checked my speed this morning, it's functioning at top speed, so I know it's not my end of things. I realize it was a long weekend, so let's see what happens this week.

It's nearly 9pm and my speeds have dropped down to the 120K range, this is bizarre. In the 2+ years I have had Expert +, it has never been below the 580-600K range, except when my phone line was torn off the pole during a storm. I really don't see much help in calling SBC just yet, there is never a problem with the line on their end. (This is the canned response I got when my phone line was laying on the street last winter!) Hopefully some of the techs who hang around here can offer some insight as to the multitude of problems in the Bay Area.

Re: Anything official concerning Bay Area slowdown

Right, the slowdowns seem to appear during peak hours, and go back to normal speeds during offpeak hours (similar to cable). The main reason I got DSL in the first place was to avoid this issue, so it's a bit troubling that recently SBC DSL appears to suffer from this problem.

Re: Anything official concerning Bay Area slowdowns?

I'm only replying to this thread to acknowledge if the current repair work being done has affected the Bay Area, notably the East Bay. As of now, there is no apparent change in the slow speeds so I will continue to monitor and update when there is a change.

After 8days of slow upload speeds, fixed, sorta, kinda maybe?

From the slew of posts we can easily see its happening during peak hours. Toaster or anyone else atleast give us some info rather take sbc's approach and say there's nothing wrong.

calling tech support is utterly useless. I get the same info. its looks fine to us. they can't answer why I'm getting such horrible speeds.

I'm supposed to be getting pro speeds. after a quick speed this this is what I"m getting.

720kbps down, 415kbps up

1/3 of what I paid.

utterly ridiculous. I hope you 6 meg people it isn't as bad.

Re: Anything official concerning Bay Area slowdowns?

Once again, speeds are incredibly slow tonight. Right now I'm pulling down a 600meg patch that earlier in the afternoon would have been done in 15 minutes (at 600KB) but is now crawling along at 150KB. I realize the techs are looking at things, but what the hell actually happened? I keep hearing rumors of overloaded routers, but how did this happen all of a sudden, or has it been an issue and is now spilling over to everyone else? As I said before, there have been no notable speed issues with my DSL in the last 5+ years, until now. It's just insane, it's every night now. Calling the "service center" will either tell me there is no problem, or that I'm within my "contractual perimeters".

Could one of our resident techs fill us in on what's really going on, or what's being worked on? I know nobody wants to make promises that cannot be kept, but at least give some assurances that something is being done or moving forward.

Add me to the list of folks having slowdowns in the Bay Area.

Nightly slowdowns. Toaster has told me that SBC is working on it. So far, speeds have been 1.5Mbps or higher for me at night. Hopefully it'll be "fixed" soon.

Normal 2.6Mbps.

Add me to the list of nightly slowdown to 600-900kbps / 400kbps on a 3.0Mbps plan. Grrr. It was great this weekend, and it stinks again tonight.

Re: Anything official concerning Bay Area slowdowns?

Well, had great speed over the weekend, now just got back up from dead stop.

I am beginning to not like ATT/SBC/Yahoo DSL.
