| Verizon DRY LOOP Hi,
I currently have Verizon as my POTS. Since my home qualified for Verizon's dry loop, I placed my order for the 768/128($19.95/month) plan on 01/10. The SRD is estimated to be 01/25. Supposingly, a technician came over on Friday to do some internal wiring, but no one was home. I'm in the process of rescheduling them to come over again. Does anyone know what type of work they'll be doing in my apartment?
BTW, once my DSL is up and ready, I'll be porting my number over to Vonage. I hope this won't affect my DSL service since I ordered it as a dry loop DSL line. | |

Seriously, wiring - depends on what needs to be done but be thankful they are babysitting the line for you.
Porting to Vonage? Did you arrange to have your DSL billed to your credit card? If not, your DSL will die a flaming death once your bill ceases in the cris/cabs billing systems (internal VZ speak). Once that happens, you will have no dial tone, no internet and yup you guessed it.....no Vonage.
What I just depicted was what HAD been happening till recently. You need to never assume all will go well and stay on top of it with Verizon to make sure your DSL stays live.

| my guess would be maybe some wiring from the NID to your apartment, as far as your package I don't know how well VOIP will perform at those speeds but I guess you will find out soon.

She told me she contacted the people @ CO and was told that I won't be able to reshedule the technician to come over to do the wiring. Either CO or a technician will contact me directly before or on the SRD which is set to be on 01/25.
I should have called out from work and stayed home Friday as I was told by the Super that someone from Verizon stopped by, and no one was home. *bangs head on wall* | |

If you ordered dry DSL, it can't be put on your POTS line. It will come into the apartment on a second line. There is likely no existing jack for a second line, so it has to be added. As long as that is how it's done, once it's up and running, what you do with the POTS line should have no effect on the DSL line. | |

I currently have POTS with no DSL. I'm currently sharing my connection with my cousin, who lives right next door from me. I figured instead of paying $48 and change for POTS, I can do the dry loop DSL through Verizon for $19.95/month and the Vonage for $14.99/month. This will save me some pocket change.
They took down my credit card info so DSL should be billed to my credit card.(I thought that was the only option available since there's no mailing checks) Since I currently don't have DSL and I'm ordering it as dry loop, I was told by Verizon customer service that it shouldn't disrupt my POTS.(I hope this is true) | |

John, Verizon confirmed with me on this too. So I hope all goes well. From the looks of it, everything didn't turn out the way as planned. We'll just see if my service will be up by 01/25.;)

From what I understand, in Vonage's site:
Vonage requires a minimum of 30kbps at its slowest settings both upload and download. It is recommended that you have 90 Kbps to achieve peak quality of service.
I normally just check my mail and browse the web and won't do heavy downloading. So, I hope the 768/128 speed will suffice. | |

Correct. I live in Brooklyn. I called yesterday morning to have a technician come over to do the wiring since I missed them last Friday.:(
They told me no technicians available until Monday morning, so I took that. Since I ordered dry loop DSL, I'm not sure exactly if the availability of circuits will affect me. Hopefully not. | |

You're right. The technician came over yesterday evening and finished the wiring in my apt. I called this morning to ask why I never received my modem and installation kit. I spoke with someone from Verizon local and they confirmed that CO is full and weren't taking any order and possibly in February, there'll be available circuits. Any way to expedite this?:( | |

--Ordering POTS + DSL.
--Switch to CC bill.
--Port POTS to Vonage.
--Wait for number to transfer.
--Cancel Vonage.
And then end up with dry loop DSL via Verizon. Option #1: placing an order for what I really want is infinitely better. But if not possible, then option #2 is what I will do.
But beofore embarking on this jounrey, I wanted to reconfirm that the humans at Verizon are now taking orders for "Dry Loop DSL."

It took one hour to reach a sales person ("due to abnormally high call volume" you're asked to "call beack later"-- pathetic... at least put me in a queue and I will wait 45 minutes with the muzak on speakerphone and continue to happily work at my desk). Anyway, finally got through to a sales rep. I asked for dry loop DSL and she knew what that is, and quoted me a price of $34.95/mo with a one year contract. I agreed to those terms. Then she explained she actually couldn't put in my order because there was too much demand and there was no way to be added to the order request list.
So she wrote my name down, along with my credit card info and promised to look every day at the list and get me in. She also gave me her email address, and said I could email her to ask for updates.
Unfortunately, there is no cable TV in the building (DirecTV is what you must use) so I DSL is the only option (no FIOS either). And Verizon seems to have a lock on that-- anyone else would still be reselling their service.
Needless to say: I was thrilled with my Earthlink cable modem in my old apartment. Great service. Totally responsive 4MB down 250kb up. $42/mo. Great stuff. I am miserable about having to return to the Soviet world of Verizon. Only through monopoly can they survive.
I'll post back when my order goes through and let you know what's next in this saga. | |

| Re: Verizon DRY LOOP I finally got to a tech at Verizon for my dry loop order, and basically for the DC area (2008 ZIP) they had a meeting on Friday (I guess to discuss many other areas as well) and were instructed to start pushing orders through, even if the switch isn't ready for them.
In my case this means that I have date of March 1st for service to go on (it's supposed to be 8 business days from the order, but they're too backed up).
So that's the current status for that area. | |
