 | [XP Pro] "Acquiring Network Address" yet I'm connected... I have a weird problem, well more like annoyance on my laptop.
I use the wireless at home and at uni. At home I assigned a static DHCP address and at uni I get a random IP. I have profiles for both set up and I'm using Windows' built in wireless utility/configurator thing... whatever it's called.
Whenever I come onto either network, the icon in the task tray changes into the "acquiring address" icon. This icon rarely turns to the "connected" icon on it's own, despite having received an IP from the DHCP server and being connected. Skype & MSN both connect, I can browse webpages and do anything on the internet or network, despite the icon showing that it's acquiring an address. If you click on the icon it pops up the Status page, which shows it's status as "Acquiring Address", but if you go to the support page, it'll show Assigned by DHCP and have all the proper IP's and gateways and DNS servers in there.
The only way I have found to get the icon back to "Connected" is to click it, go to Properties, and then hit Ok. That will change it back to what it's supposed to be, but a rather annoying detour to get it to work like it's supposed to.
Any idea why this is doing this? I have the following "stuff" bound to it (i.e. checked off in the Properties page).
- Client for Microsoft Networks - File & Printer Sharing - TCP/IP (v4) - Network Monitor Driver
For what it's work, I'm using the latest Intel Wireless drivers (2200BG). I also can't find any information about this problem on Google or searching this site. I've tried everything I can think of to see if that fixes the problem, but I'm out of ideas.
I hope someone has a solution or explanation for this stupid annoyance!

 | I have this same EXACT issue. I'm connected, but the little icon in the taskbar displays the "acquiring network address". Well i have found a 'temporary' solution to the problem. (BTW im not wireless so i dont know if this will work for you):
1.Right click on the network icon at the bottom right on your taskbar and click Open Network Connections. 2.Next, right click on your primary network connection and click Properties. 3.On that page, you should see "Show icon in notifcation area when connected". UNCHECK THIS BOX 4.Then click OK. 5.Then go back to the properties page by repeating step 2. 6.This time, CHECK the box that you unchecked in step 3. 7. Click ok and it should work as normal.
This works for me and i am using Windows XP: Home. but i had the some problem on my other computer which had winXP pro. my ISP is Verizon DSL and my modem is a westell.
I have found no permanent solution to this |

|
 | reply to ubercam I get this also with my linksys wireless adapters. I think it happens because both XP and the linksys software are trying to control the adapter, not completely sure. But the connections work fine, just like you said. |

Re: [XP Pro] "Acquiring Network Address" yet I'm c Network Location Awareness was disabled (I disable useless services unless I know they're good for something).
I've enabled it now, and we'll see what happens.
Thanks for the tip, I'll let you know how it turns out.

I use the Windows utility, I didn't even install the Intel one this time around because my University's secure wireless connection uses SecureW2 and it doesn't work with Intel's utility, so that's not my problem. Usually with those the 3rd party utility will disable WZC while they're running, or sense that it's enabled and force you to decide which one to use. If you're always using the Linksys utility, go to Start, Run..., type 'services.msc' and scroll down to the bottom and disable the Wireless Zero Config service. That should solve your problems in that respect.

 | I've been trying to solve this problem for a week now - re-starting NLA service seems to have solved it - thank you! |
|

2) if you have two network cards installed, try disabling one of them. |

 | I did already but still the same. I have only one network card. Any other ways to do so, such as change the registry settings. BTW, my computer has got virus and malware before but I removed them already. |

BTW, my computer has got virus and malware before but I removed them already. I do not think the virus/malware has anything to do with the two little computers flashing the lights and saying "acquiring network address".
If the lights still flash, click on the two computers> status>properties>TCP/IP properties. Then close out of all of those and see if the problem is solved. |
