LAB Edits - Side by side

Click for full size
Post your LAB edits side-by-side, like the example above. Tell what LAB technique you used.

For the above example: In GIMP: LAB curve steepening on A&B channels, 7 pixel Gauissian Blur (@3008x2000) on A&B channels. S-Curve and a little USM on L channel.

[Note: In Gimp, LAB 'channels' are treated as seperate layers.]

Re: LAB Edits - Side by side

I have a few I would like to post, but I don't know how to do the side-by-side thing.

Re: LAB Edits - Side by side

Open your edit. Go to File>Open As Layer. Select the original unedited photo. [You may need to resize this layer to fit the edited one] Select half of the image, pick the eraser, set the brush to the biggest one (probably galaxy) and erase that half. Voila.

See, now I am learning another new technique!

Open in PS > Image > mode > LAB. Image > Apply Image > Overlay > 35%. Sharpen in LAB and RGB using this technique: »Re: [FYI] Sharpening Tutorial.

Canon EOS 10D
35mm 1/180th F8 ISO100

I could have done much more.....but.....just keeping it basic.

I've been using that technique ever since you posted it!! It works great!

(btw, I tried using it in RBG mode and looks like the same thing with LAB mode.. do I really have to switch to LAB mode?)

It works better in LAB. For reason WAY too technical for me to understand.

Re: LAB Edits - Side by side

An even better method is to go into LAB and then Curve. Adjust the "a" and "b" channels and lastly the "lightness" channel. Can be tricky but also can produce amazing results.

Hmmm.... I smell my next plugin! Bring Lab to the masses!

Converting to Lab is a snap. Coding customizable curves might well be beyond me, though... maybe I'll start off with your other simpler method. The math for overlaying is basically a one-liner.

Here's an edit of my waterfall pic. First is original (resized down to 800) and second is after post-processing.

Here's what I did:

1) Converted to LAB.
2) Opened curves.
3) Adjusted "lightness" curves until I got good shadow/highlights.
4) Steepened the "A" channel curves and steepened the "B" channel curves to give a lot more color.
5) Went to Image->Apply image. I Set the blend mode to overlay and the channel to "A". "A" channel worked well for this image since the A channel brings out the orange and greens like velvia film. "B" channel didn't work good because it turned my greens to the color orange. "LAB" channel gave too much contrast for my tastes.
6) Sharpened it using this technique: »Re: [FYI] Sharpening Tutorial

Re: LAB Edits - Side by side

The sky is "prettier" in the second one, but the color looks fake. I am looking out a window as I view your two samples and the color is much truer to the actual sky in your first one.

That's actually close to what the sky was, if I remember. The sun was setting so it was an orangish color, not as blue as midday.

I don't think most of us here are trying to recreate reality in our work... sometimes we have a mood we're after, or want to bring out some kind of utopian view of the scene, etc ...IOW, make a new reality. (I forget the quotes, but many others have said this more eloquently).

However for my tastes, I do think a little too much saturation got introduced in the clouds... which may have pushed certain parts out of gamut. Still, that's quibbling on my part.
