AOL Price Going Up

As crazy as it sounds, they are actually going to increase the price of their $23.90 and $4.95 Price Plans. The increase will be $2 to $25.90 and $6.95. Why? Because they are losing money because of bundles with other companies and everyone well knowing of the cheaper rates.

The minor plus side to all of this? New bundles with Charter and Qwest. Charter's lowest tier (384/384) will be $25.90, Qwest I'm not 100% sure since things changed at the last minute but I think its like $28.90

Verizon bundles, TWC bundles, etc...if ordered after February 1st are going up also to the new $25.90. But if you already have the service, I dont think it will increase as far as I know.

This all will be sent to approx 70% of the members on February 1st and take affect around March 1 (or next billing date after Fed 1st).

So..if you know anyone paying $23.90 or $4.95, be ready for that jump unfortunately

I'm an employee of AOL, thats how I got the info/know of whats coming.

RDins

@comcast.net
Well they are losing customers, so I would be shocked if they did that. Their future is in their portals, they are top 4 in hits on the web and their advertising $$ is increasing a mad rate, while their subscriber rate is dropping.

AnonyAOL

@cox.net
A press release will be released tomorrow outlining their National Broadband Plan and price increases.

Also, it has been delayed until February 6 now but some of the bundle deals will still go into effect on the 31st/1st

Re: AOL Price Going Up

The price got cheaper, not more expensive... much MUCH cheaper. Apparently you didn't actually read between the lines.

Re: AOL Price Going Up

This is a "Teaser Press Release" actually. They delayed the price change announcement until Feb. 6 now and actually, the price affect wont go into...effect until March (when your first billed at that rate I guess).

So..this is only part 1 of the changes to come I didnt know they were holding back on the info for the pricing until another press release on Feb. 6 or so.

The Telcos should charge AOL $5 a month if AOL is to be bundled!

Then take that five bucks right off the top of their usual DSL pricing.

If someone wants that extra AOL background crap running, and AOL

makes extra big $$ from ads they push, make 'em pay to reach you!

Astors

@comcast.net
That is a very competitive price though, they are offering broadband for almost the same price as dialup.

Re: AOL Price Going Up

Yes, and I did mention above that there would be new Bundles with Qwest, Charter, and redone bundles through Verizon, TWC, Bellsouth, etc...

and TWC's BUndle price actually went up sooner, its $25.90 now but they increased the Lite speed to 768k at least to compensate =p

I remember a couple years, natch maybe it was 4-5 years ago, on a specific deals site that one could ask for an "AOL email only" service tier, meaning the connection would exclusively outside of the AOL network;

0 hours dial-up/additional dial-up hours @ $2.95

it may have moved to $4.95/hr... am wondering if this is the price of that tier of service?

i've been sitting too long paying $14.95/mth for BYOA broadband... and didn't re-rate when they promo'd the 9.95 BYOA when it was "new"

anyhoot, would appreciate any advise acting on a rate change by calling CSRIndia before Feb 1.

Re: AOL Price Going Up

As an AOL employee aren't you supposed to be signing a confidentiality agreement? In fact I know you did. The fact that you disclosed this will subject you to termination of employment and any/or all other legal action.

I'd be very careful with this in the future.

whats the big deal really? i just dont see it

AnonyAOL

NY Times reported last Friday I believe that AOL was increasing the rate also. Granted, I said it sooner but its better to let people know now then later so they can prepare before AOL drops the bomb on the 6th

Re: AOL Price Going Up

But as an AOL employee myself, Anon .. I know that there are a lot of other things that go into the new changes which I'm not allowed to share with anyone until a few days from now.

I'm sure you know these other things as well unless you quit the job

Re: AOL Price Going Up

I have the BYOA for 9.95 but I did a check today on KW price plans and it is effective today dial up is 25.90 a month now and BYOA is 14.95 (that remained unchanged), shouldnt the prices come down now for dial up. I have AOL BYOA for my duaghters (ages 6 &5) they like the Kids AOL but thats it. They are going to lose more customers by hiking up the dial up prices.

Re: AOL Price Going Up

The reason it was done was because alot of the bundle deals with other providers are $25.90 so...basically, you tell the consumer "You get dialup for $25.90 or get a faster connection for $25.90 (or $29.90), just pay the modem fees, etc..." and most will go for the quicker connection.

Except that reliable Dialup is much cheaper than that, if you make a modest effort to look. I pay $8.95/month for 56K without restriction or filtering with ISP.com. I don't do cable, for many reasons...

A guaranteed 1500/768k minimum (no "up to" BS), DSL connection is what I want, and there is really no good non-greedy reason why the prices cannot come down to $20/month for that service, and still be able to make a buck, without branding ads. Bundling is not for everyone and anyone.

The regional monopolies have the infrastructure locked up and governored, so I won't hold my breath. I will wait and lobby for municipal broadband development so we can get a reasonable price/service ratio, because you will never see it from anywhere else in the forseeable future. Don't count on it from AOL or the baby bells...

Its funny...If you are an AOL employee, that has access to this info, this would lead me to believe that you have a 9-5 job with AOL. Which means you are not only disclosing internal confidential materials without legal's approval you are doing so from the AOL corporate network. I must say, you are quite honestly trying to bad mouth the employer that is responsable for feeding you and paying for you to live. As a fellow AOL employee, I must say that quite honestly, you are one of the bad assets, that the company has, and I personally hope you realise that bad mouthing your employer to the public will have no benefit to you in the long run! How do you expect anybody to respect you as a credible source?

Grow up already!

Kicker9

Re: AOL Price Going Up

My sentiments exactly Herndon. You and I know that there is a lot more that goes into this than just price.

AnonyAOL

@cox.net

Re: AOL Price Going Up

and I know also that there is alot more in it then just hte price. What DID I say in the beginning? I told some good things that have come along with the price adjustment which are good for members who didnt want to pay too much more for a broadband connection.

Suck Up Team

@comcast.net

Ah you too AOL love my job guys need to stop. AnonyAOL, did not give away secret internal information, just merely stated what was going to occur. If AOHell canned all your butts today, you would be crying how this company sucks; as it does really. Get off of your small horse and quit your bitching. Go sell your useless stock options. Get off your knees, and out from under your boss desk.

This suck a** company has misled it's investors and lied to the public for far too long. Time for it to drop in the Atlantic Ocean, and float away. Just my 2c, take it or leave it.

@aol.com

I don't believe he is a bad employee. I am a user and if an employee tells me the truth about a price increase it is a good thing. Last time I checked you get a paycheck because of the USERS. If there are none then you don't get paid period!!!!!! Also I am a dial up user as I live in an area where broad band is not available. So I get to pay more for the priviledge of living where I live? That is a crock!! Maybe you broad band users should remember that it is NOT available everywhere in the world.

Re: AOL Price Going Up

Its not so much the price increase revelation than making some false statements about AOL.

And if AOL canned me there'd be a good reason. Not just for kicks and giggles. A lot has changed, people ... a lot. And if you are a "former employee", then you know why you got canned.

As far as the price increase, as it stands if you need a lower price, you can get one easily. If you are still on dialup you should be able to get the service for $17 / month. Just call and ask.

question for the AOL employees:
what was the reason for terminating the "AOL communicator" ?
i believe it was a branded RIM-950.
i heard the reason was, there wasnt enough subscribers to justify the continued operation.
i did like the communicator though, alot better than the sidekick they started offering as a replacement, which i didnt take.
i did some mods to mine, extra rechargable battery attachment, twin external antennas (recieve/transmit).
i have all the internal documents, service information, programming software, cradle jig and extra parts.
even modified some of software on the device.
yeah, those were the good 'ole days.

You mean the black portable device? I simply was under the impression it made more financial sense to just include AOL IM in cellular phones.

Email is another issue, but given the choice I'd IM someone. Who knows... I wasn't with them at the time.

INdialup

@aol.com

Just received the notice from AOL about the price increase. Outrageous! (That prompted my Google search where I found this page.) Unfortunately I have AOL dial-up (from which I get frequently bumped) and, like many people, I live where no form of broadband is available except satellite, which at $60 per month isn't really an option.

AOL was already overpriced to begin with. Now I and many many people will jump ship, and join the many who have already been leaving AOL, even before the announcement of the price increase. What a stupid move on AOL's part!

RIP OFF

@aol.com

Son, what you need is a good education. Turn off the computer and go back to school.

JudeHey

@comcast.net
You have other options, the have the Netscape ISP for 10 a month, so I'm sure that probably has the same dialin numbers for all areas so that shouldn't be a problem. Walmart ISP is also 10 a month, and is very similiar to AOL.

Additionally, the other AOL employees calling out AnonyAOL only made AnonyAOL's claims more credible. If the leak of the information was against company policy, all three of them should be reprimanded. The proper approach would have been to stay silent and try to discuss the issue with private messages.
