Could not add my laptop to the wireless network

Hi All,

Recently I have purchased a new HP centrino laptop with 802.11b/g supported. I was trying to add this laptop to my existing wireless network (using d-link DL 612+ router) but I'm not be able to so.

When I clicked on the "wireless network connection" in the system tray my network name (ssid) just didn't show up on the wireless list (I got some other ssid detected, my neighbours probably) I have also tried using the "wireless connection wizard" but again, still couldn't see my ssid on the wireless list.

So is it mean that my integrated wireless device didn't compatible with my router?

Thanks in advance

If you have SSID broadcast disabled at the router, enable it.

If it is actually a 614+, disable all the high speed modes. Can other PCs connect wirelessly?

I have turned the 4x mode off and now I can see my ssid from the network list, but I still can't connect to it, when I click on "connect" and enter my 128bit encryption key, it takes a while to load and the "connecting" popup then disappeared without connecting to my ssid. Why? Also why I can see my ssid with 4x mode turned off?

Thanks

I suggest you also turn off the 2x mode and make sure the router is not using a 256 bit key.

Sorry I made a mistake by setting the authentication to open, changed it to shared and now i can connect! thanks janderso1 you're my saviour

mind telling me why the 4x mode will make my ssid disappeared from the wireless list?

Thanks again

All the speeds above 11 are proprietary (don’t conform to the Wifi b standard). I suspect that was your problem.

If you have revision A of the 614+ which doesn’t support WPA, I suggest you replace it and any other equipment that doesn’t support WPA with equipment that supports WPA or preferably WPA2. WEP will prevent people from accidently connecting to your network, but won’t keep out someone who wants on your network.
