Backup Question > Would this work?

Let's say I created an image of a Dell Dimension PC running XP Home. What would happen if I restored this image on a different type of PC, say, a Sony Vaio Laptop?

Now, I know that these are different PC's and they would have different hardware and that there would would be some tweaking involved, but would this work in theory?

Thanks!

If the partition was EXACTLY the same size as the Dell imaged partition, it may install. The drivers will be all wrong though.

OK, let's assume the partition was exactly the same size, simple enough. Wouldn't XP just report that some drivers were missing and offer to look for the missing drivers on the Net?

Why would the partition size make a difference, assuming the partition size was not bigger than the drive that the image was being loaded to?

For example, let's say the image was originally from a 20 GB partition, and the image was being loaded to a 40 GB partition...couldn't I just use Partition Magic to enlarge the partition once the image was loaded?

Thanks!

A reinstall and no dramas with all the drivers sounds easier, driver issues cause more problems than its worth, you could( I should say inevitable) will be giving yourself more of a headache, so what is on the image you want to keep, maybe you should be asking "how do i access an image to move files across"

Backup Question > Would this work?

OK, Norwegian, so there's no way to do this, no customizeable "universal" Windows XP image. I have nothing critical to save just yet. This was just a thought...all my data/OS is OK. Thanks for the information, though.

Re: Backup Question > Would this work?

Partitions are unimportant as long as you have enough space. A lot of factors should be considered before you do that. It's a lot easier with W2K than it is with XP. The main problem is that immediately after the transfer and boot up, you'll have to Activate your version of XP again because it recognizes the changes in the hardware and it won't let you do anything (including tweaking of the drivers) unless you activate.

Now if you have a lot of driver conflicts, then you may not even be able to activate and unless you activate, you can't fix the driver problems.

The other major problem is that you want to transfer a PC to a laptop. In most cases, you'll have problems with your video drivers and the display. If you can't see anything, you can't activate and you can't fix the drivers, etc...

It's a lot easier with W2K and I have done it several times but never from a PC to a laptop. It's just too much trouble.
