[XP] Getting negative ping times

For the last two days or so I've been getting negative ping times occasionally. I know it's not my ISP as my other PC always has reasonable values.

This seems to be causing a lot of gaming related disconnections, however SSH seems fine.

Any ideas? I'm running an IPCop router and my NIC is onboard, with a Marvell Yukon chipset.

Edit - odd, my onboard Nvidia MCP networking controller gets normal pings, but after every couple they go from the usual 20ms to the one site to 60ms, where the other one doesn't do that.

I even switched my port on the switch I use, and there was no difference (negative ping wise).

Seems to be fixed after a reboot. Windows hung on loading so I backed off on my o/c a bit and it now works just fine.

Weird!

Well, I'm glad you got it fixed because a negative ping could only mean there's a rip in the Space-Time Continuum. You wouldn't want a worm hole opening up in your home.

I wish my pings were negative, that would be amazing

Actually, it's back, even at lower clockspeeds. I have a feeling it's something to do with the NIC being integrated on my motherboard, the one NIC gives me negative pings now and then which results in lagginess and disconnections, while the other one gives me 30-60ms just to my router.

I'm thinking I may just have to install a PCI NIC.

Do you have a dual-core CPU by accident?

I get this as well. It seems to be an issue with dual core processors on windows xp (seemed fixed in vista, but i didn't test extensively). If you set the process affinity of ping.exe to only one core or the other, you will get different results. It doesn't occur immediately after rebooting, and seems to slowly get worse. Game engines especially do not like this problem, so if you game you should set the process affinity of the game every time you launch it. I've been in contact with ASUS about this and they won't help me at all -- in fact they now hang up on me and tell me they're going to have someone call me back but it never happens (4 or 5 times they've done this). Sounds like they're trying to avoid extremely expensive recalls perhaps? If anyone has a REAL solution, I'm very interested. By the way, setting the process affinity doesn't completely fix it. Pinging localhost with the first core sometimes gives negative results, the other core sometimes always positive but still not correct, like 10ms instead of 1ms.

I have been getting the same issue with my ASUS AN8-SLI Premium MB and X2 4800+ (new gaming rig). At first I thought it was my D-Link DGL-4300 but ran ping from a different machine to the inside interface and one of our DNS server all night and didn't have any issues. I even tried the other NIC on the MB and it made no difference. It acts so bad from my gaming rig I can't even play online . Any solutions would be greatly appreicated.

let's see how much hardware we all have in common.
I suspect it's the nForce4 chipset.

ASUS A8N-SLI Premium
Athlon64 X2 4400+
2GB (4 * 512MB) Corsair XMS DDR 400MHz 2-2-2-5 SDRAM
ASUS 256MB nVidia 7800 GTX
PC Power & Cooling 510 SLI
2 * 400GB Seagate sATA disks
74GB 10,000rpm Raptor sATA disk
Plextor sATA PX-716SA
Creative X-Fi XtremeMusic

notes: I have tried Kingston ram, a 6800 video card, no sound card, a different power supply, even a gigabyte motherboard (same nForce4 chipset) and they all have the same problem. I also have a friend with almost exactly the same hardware as I (he has a 4800+) and he has the same problem.

no CD/DVD/floppy/extra PCI card.

Exact same problem.

Seems it is an NF4 problem, and after searching around it appears that it is a common problem. I haven't found any fixes, despite having drivers etc all up to date. I have to restart my computer about once every 24 hours to keep normal ping times.

After reading this thread, I'm still unsure if you mean negative as in higher and thus not good ping times, or if the pings times are actual negative numbers (ie. -10.3ms). At first I thought you meant actual negatives (which would be strange), but further reading seems to indicate higher pings times. Care to enlighten me with a less ambiguous description?

Not that I'm seeing this problem, just curious. I'm not running a dual core CPU, just using HT on Intel CPU's.

@arcor-ip.net

The numbers that are reported by ping.exe are really negative (which does of course not make ANY sense at all).

It seems to be linked to the nForce Ethernet Controller and the use of Dual Core-CPUs.

I also have this obscure effect, but i didn't notice any bad behavior because of it - it's just very strange :P
Transfer Rates to my Fileserver (connected by gigabit) are fine, as well as for example my ping times when playing Battlefield 2.

@com.au

Thanks for the tips. I have tried installing the equiv. drivers for the Opteron dual-core CPU (170) and it has resolved the negative ping problem. I was running Windows Server 2003 Std 32-bit. If the problem returns I will post that here.
