as Wi-fi sharing goes up the laws might have to be changed to adapt so that if someone runs a hotspot they arent responcable for someone downloading music and movies.

Geez, get over yourself.
That about sums up the issue. What kind of person does it take to argue the case against charity? You'd have to be pretty full of yourself.

I would like to know who would die if internet was not available? Let me see, about 20 years ago WIFI nor the internet was not a common place in most places. What did you or anyone else do for your information? Do you own a Library card? Geez, get over yourself.
hahah Agreed, some people can't last a day if the internet is lost at home.

Stupid me Drove out to L.I I did not expect to be left to drive back home... Well I got lost.. I did not bring my cellphone with me..

SOOOOO happy I took my Pda along with me, I was someplace About 10 Miles away from J.K.F airport, and my pda went off because it found someones house with WiFi, so i pulled over on the Street and made a call on the VOIP line.

lol I can't say it saved me, but I did get a nice view of Long L.I hahah

nevertheless I will be keeping my VOIP line

Both of these problems can be solved with a single solution. The Public IP project. Public IP makes a bootable CD that acts as a network management/network policy enforcement tool. It handles packet shaping which keeps people from consuming all of your bandwidth. More importantly though, it prevents people from sending spam, downloading iso's, mp3's, rar's etc and keeps them from viewing pornography via dansguardian.

I've used this for years at a number of locations (homes and businesses) and never have had a problem with either of the issues you mentioned.
That is a cool setup. But how many people are going to go to the trouble of devoting a separate PC just to provide internet access to neighbors. I think it is a great way to set up a WiFi hotspot if so inclined, but probably not for the people who may take part in this sharemywifi idea just to help out a neighbor.
[attachment=1]
So long as the ZoneCD machine (as shown in the diagram) does its job, you are partly safe. Just note that ANYTHING that it does allow to occur will be linked to your Assigned IPN (since it is going through the WAN Router and thus will be NAT'ed to the WAN IPN.

It is amazing how you try and justify breaking certain rules.
Who said anything about the justification of rule breaking? If you use an ISP that polices what you do with the capacity you pay for, then that's what you need to consider.

No one told anyone to break any rules. The comment you're replying to doesn't mention any rules at all. Maybe you mean to direct that to the post above the one you replied to.

Those people who are on a tight budget or limited income are not worried about buying HSI. I think medicine, insurance and many other life necessities are what is a must have.

Nice try to twist what I said, but it doesn't fly.

Anyone without Internet access can easily go to the library during library hours and use the computers there.

Wanting to get online at 2 AM (or whenever) just because you want to, and not when the library is open, does not invalidate the freely available access that it provides, provided that the user has enough self control to go do it when the library is open.

This has nothing to do with ad-hoc "grass roots" WiFi networks. Someone (maybe you, I don't really care) mentioned above that this was a good way for people who couldn't afford access to get access. I said the library would be good for that. Then you jumped in with this rambling nonsense.

End of story.

I don't follow. Where does "expecting life to bend to your whims" come into play?

Grass-roots wifi isn't about going to your neighbors house and asking them to set up a wireless connection for you. It's about people who realize the value of Internet connectivity and their willingness to share it. If that's a problem to you, then don't share your connection or use a shared link.

Don't act like grass-roots wifi is some kind of miscreant activity catering to the worlds under-achievers. Save that crap for all the people taking advantage of people's networks without the knowledge of the person paying for the link.

A 3-11 mill worker (or a 3-11 pizza delivery driver) could easily get up at noon and take care of whatever needed to be taken care of online before going to work.

Self control means not expecting life to bend to your whims.

There is no compelling need to get online at midnight. If you have that little self control then you have other problems besides lack of a connection to the Internet.
Agreed, being a 3-11 mill worker is certainly a worse problem than no internet connection. Would suck eating dinner at midnight, and having to watch infomercials as your "prime time". Wouldn't be very fun going to the library at what felt like 4am to you either I suspect.

It's a bummer when your control is less "self" than "work".

Public libraries are great for this.
Apparently so are grass-roots wifi networks.

Curiously, do you have to go to the library to watch TV or listen to the radio? How about at midnight?
No, but I don't have to sign up for Internet service to watch TV or listen to the radio either.

Internet access is most closely related to books and reference materials, which we as a community have provided at the library for decades. Just as access to said books and other reference material is provided "free" to those who otherwise may not be able to afford it, Internet access is also provided free of charge (including the cost of the computer, even) at almost every library.

There is no compelling need to get online at midnight. If you have that little self control then you have other problems besides lack of a connection to the Internet.

Let them get their own connection. I do not pay my hard earned dollars for a broadband connection just so my whole block can enjoy it for free.
