[BT] Nasty Letter From Universal Studios

My IP forwarded a letter from US in regards to a movie they say I downloaded. The movie in question was "Hannibal". This is the first movie I have ever managed to fully complete using bittorrent and the letter came minutes after completion. Did I download from a trap possibly and what action if any can they take? I am in Canada.

post the letter. The letters are usually warnings telling you to stop sharing their copyrighted materials, and to delete it, if i'm not mistaken.

BTW, you should treat all torrents (except legal torrents like Linux distros) like "traps" because BT forces you to upload, and it's that act of sharing copyrighted materials which gets you in hot water.

don't be mad at your IP, be mad at how easy it was for you to get caught. BT was never made with user privacy in mind.

I stay on the same few trackers and only distribute their torrents to their users. I think if anything happens to be copyrighted it is much safer that way than to use Kazaa, Limewire, Morpheus or any other open client. Just make sure any peer extension isn't open so that you only share with YOUR tracker. My main tracker produces alot of its own material and actually it has some of the best stuff out there.

if you're referring to private trackers, they're not that safe either. Anyone who is persistent enough will get an invite, join the tracker, and view all the IPs for whatever torrents are hosted.

I got an email from Cogeco via some studio about downloading Dead Like Me episodes a few years ago. I stopped sharing the episode in question but kept using BT for a while.

While there trying to change things, as of right now downloading is still legal up here.

Then I basically switched over completely to Newsgroups so I wouldn't have to worry about that stuff anymore.

Can you give us more information or a link? I didn't know there were any other sources where leeching was kosher.

Well, IRC you can technically upload for (and people like you to). Same goes for newsgroups (altbin over on IRC).

Bittorent has more content than usenet available at any given time even with 70 day retention.

I'm guessing you don't use usenet?

»slyck.com/

might not be the best information, but it is a great starting point.

Maybe I'm missing something, but I don't see a guide for FxP on slyck.com.
