I'd guess that neither of us know the answer to that for sure. We could speculate, but obviously it'd be just that. Of all the people I know who've done similar projects 100% of them use Public IP. Granted that 100% is just me though =)
When I decided that might be something I wanted to do, I picked up a newspaper and found someone selling an old 333Mhz system for $20. Bought the machine and a cheap PCI NIC for another $10 and it's been running fine since. For the businesses I've setup with the same, for wifi access while you have your coffee etc, they've purchased new barebones systems with 256MB of RAM and only a CDROM drive. Total cost to them has been around $150.
My point was just that there's a solution to the problems you mention.

TOS be dammed, I ran Netstumbler on my way to work the other day and in the five whole miles I go to work I recorded 85 access points 62 of them were wide open, 48 of them had SSID's like "Linksys", Netgear54G, ACTIONTEC, Dlink, and even "Default".
They should deal with thease people first. |

Agreed. It's 2006, the Internet has become an important part of our society. There's been plenty of occasions where I wasn't at home but needed some kind of access. In my opinion sharing some percentage of your capacity via some safe method is a great thing. I've had users who were just passing through the area use it, people who's own connection was down and they needed to look something up online, and even some retired folks who were on a fixed/limited income who couldn't afford broadband at all. To all of those people having a connection available to them is likely a great thing. Internet access is quickly approaching the status of community infrastructure and in my opinion everyone is entitled to at least minimal access (http(s)).

Internet access is most closely related to books and reference materials, which we as a community have provided at the library for decades. Just as access to said books and other reference material is provided "free" to those who otherwise may not be able to afford it, Internet access is also provided free of charge (including the cost of the computer, even) at almost every library.
There is no compelling need to get online at midnight. If you have that little self control then you have other problems besides lack of a connection to the Internet.

Agreed, being a 3-11 mill worker is certainly a worse problem than no internet connection. Would suck eating dinner at midnight, and having to watch infomercials as your "prime time". Wouldn't be very fun going to the library at what felt like 4am to you either I suspect.
It's a bummer when your control is less "self" than "work".

Grass-roots wifi isn't about going to your neighbors house and asking them to set up a wireless connection for you. It's about people who realize the value of Internet connectivity and their willingness to share it. If that's a problem to you, then don't share your connection or use a shared link.
Don't act like grass-roots wifi is some kind of miscreant activity catering to the worlds under-achievers. Save that crap for all the people taking advantage of people's networks without the knowledge of the person paying for the link.

| Nice try to twist what I said, but it doesn't fly.
Anyone without Internet access can easily go to the library during library hours and use the computers there.
Wanting to get online at 2 AM (or whenever) just because you want to, and not when the library is open, does not invalidate the freely available access that it provides, provided that the user has enough self control to go do it when the library is open.
This has nothing to do with ad-hoc "grass roots" WiFi networks. Someone (maybe you, I don't really care) mentioned above that this was a good way for people who couldn't afford access to get access. I said the library would be good for that. Then you jumped in with this rambling nonsense.
End of story.

Who said anything about the justification of rule breaking? If you use an ISP that polices what you do with the capacity you pay for, then that's what you need to consider.
No one told anyone to break any rules. The comment you're replying to doesn't mention any rules at all. Maybe you mean to direct that to the post above the one you replied to.
