| New Virtual Server Company Needed
Hi - often reader, seldom poster here, but I seek your advice. I have been a Global Servers virtual server customer for just over three years now, and overall have been VERY happy, but...
Recently (past 6 months) have been having issues with misuse/abuse of my mail system and can get no real info or suggested solutions from Global Servers. Just yesterday I called support and got a "I'll look it up and get back to you" - this from someone with a screaming baby in the background and they of course didn't bother to take my name, phone number, or e-mail address. (I was aware of this as they were trying to get me off the phone - I just let it slide - I'm a father too so maybe the kid really needed his attention, but that's a lousy excuse for support.)
I must state that I'm ESSENTIALLY CLUELESS about Linux, and depend on the support staff for any security or configuration concerns; I also prefer Plesk control panel, need the ability to install PHP and scripting apps, have only small storage requirements but need a pretty good amount of bandwidth. My biggest need is a fast, dependable server and pipe - and secondly is a kind, understanding support staff who will take the time to answer ANY question and help me make sure (or teach me to know for sure) that my server and e-mail services are as secure as possible. I'm an easy customer for the kind of money I'm currently spending - I'm only hosting 6 domains, and they are all "in-house", I do not re-sell hosting and four of those domains get essentially NO traffic.
So, I need a good server, but an even better support staff/Linux educator  for a reasonable MONTHLY price (no annual commitments until I've had the service for a while).
Any suggestions?

1 edit | Surpass Hosting just came out with their VPS packages a few days ago. They look impressive. I may upgrade my shared account to a VPS soon. Maybe.

PowerVPS, been with them for nearly 1 year. They'll hold your hands when needed, and continue to at any time of the day. Response times are within minutes as resolution within 30mins or less. The forums are flowing with infomation and help that ARE monitored by the support team but dont support the same results as tickets. They have a initial server setup that will secure your VPS with updates and all patches. Most people will say PowerVPS is rated as number 1 in the business.

Very low prices...industry lows for that matter! Check them out.
I've had one support question, and that was to get Reverse DNS setup on my VPS so that AOL users would have functionality to receive mail from my server. The response was done within the next 24 hours of even filing a ticket (to allow for DNS propogation).
RapidVPS has proved to be (in my book) one of the best VPS hosts out there! |

I am currently a shared hosting customer at Rochen and have been happy with their service. However, I am intruiged at the idea of a virtual server hosting company. I noticed that

has a virtual server for 9.95 per month which seems much lower that others advertising $40-60 per month. It seems too good to be true?? I am looking to host to separate domains on a virtual account.
Any feedback would be helpful. Why is rapidvps so cheap?? |

Just wanted to update the forum. I ended up signing with rapidvps.com and so far am impressed.
The $9 package gets you command line access to the box. If you are looking for Cpanel, etc that will cost more but they still seem to be very price competitive.
The server performance is good (I have the 9.95 plan) and reliability is good as well. Occasionally the server hangs for a second or two when I am SSH'd in which is probably a processor spike. But this seems pretty normal in a shared VPS environment. Also not sure if it is the server or my ISP connection.
I am most impressed with the responsiveness of the service. Typically email turn around is less than 30mins. I asked them to provide a reverse PTR record for my server (which all providers are not willing to do) and they happily complied and inserted the record within the hour. |
