TOS? In the US, the only ISP showing interest is Speakeasy. I don't see many others joining in.

After reading many of the forums here about speed caps, download caps, this cap, that cap, block this port and that port. All done without the knowledge of the customer until after the fact. That is until an end user violated some unspoken, undocumented, unaddressed issue in the TOS. I don't see TOS being a problem if a broadband provider decided to or not participate.
They'll just wave the invisible magic TOS wand and make it so.... so a end user can or can't do it. |

They want you to turn your house wifi on so others can use it so that they can grow into a business based on your sweat!
Giving access to wifi is like giving the keys to your house or even sharing that computer network with everyone..
You pay the bill and we make the money..

Except the 99% of land areas not covered by residential hotspots, most of which have a hard time providing a signal inside the house, let alone outside.

Yeah no doubt some unanswered questions.
The first that comes to my mind is why would I even consider doing it? Would my ISP pay me? Who is going to assume the legal responsibilities? Just to name a couple.
I doubt that really want to pay you to do it. Even if they did, it probably wouldn't be worth my time and the hassles. The whole point seems to be a low/no cost way to grow their network. And I sure as hell will not extend their network for free. |

Don't know about that. When I got my Verizon DSL connected at my home-dock, VZ sent me a "free" wireless linksys router. I have the wireless on, and open (default). Every once in a while, someone comes by and says thanks for the connection (I broadcast my Boat's name as the SSID), they pulled into the marina, discovered a "hot spot", and used it.
I am only using a piece of VZ supplied gear the way they sent it to me, how can they complain?
This whole "FON" thing is a bunch of crap, why should I pay FON to open up my router for others to use? Open 802.11 is almost everywhere, and should be encouraged, as a step towards community WiFi.
