It sounded suspicious with all the spelling errors and asking first if I ship to London, then asking if I ship to California. I had heard rumours of people using stolen credit cards to pay for items they wanted shipped quickly. Then after they were shipped, the Seller found out the card was stolen or counterfeit. It was too late to get back their goods so they lost their money. I couldn't find word of that scam on this site - not sure if I looked in the right place or not. But to be safe, I looked at the internet headers of the email - this is what they showed:

Hmmm..no "TO:" Address. Why?

I checked out 66.178.82.219 and did a whois - traced it to South Africa (I think I did it right).

Anyway, I couldn't resist giving these people some bait to see if they'd take my hook, line and sinker. I thought if I sent them something ridiculous, filled with spelling errors and incorrect words, and use a well-known but non-existent American invention, I could see if they were Americans or now. So I prepared this email and sent it out:

Ms. Linda Sam,

You're in luck! I have 10,000 Doo-hickey's in my stockroom ready to be shipped. Doo-Hickey's are the latest craze here in America. Children are clamoring to get them. They are such fun for children to play with and safe too! They don't have any small or breakable parts, so they are hazard free. Everyone who has seen a Doo-hickey in action wants to own a Doo-Hickey! They're the best thing since sliced bread!

I've been importing them from my factory in China, but they have been shipping out as fast as I can get them. Most of my accounts are asking for more and more of these Doo-hickeys. I'm sure you're heard of them. Even our President joked about them during his speech the other night on national television. Now Ms. Sam, I have held back about 50,000 in case I receive new account inquiries. That way I can allocate 10,000 to each new account. If you are interested in purchasing my Doo-hickeys you had better act immediately. As I said, these are going fast. I've been receiving new inquiries daily. Just today I've received seven new inquiries out of which yours was one. So if you want to sell Doo-hickeys you'd better order them soon.

And I do ship world-wide. To London in the UK, to Asian markets, to African Markets and also to Arabian markets. Everyone wants my Doo-hickeys! Demand is strong! With the right advertizing, you'll sell your order of Doo-hickeys in a matter of hours. That's right, HOURS! That's how fast they have been selling here in the US of A.

Here's my stipulations and price makers:

Buy Price each
1 - 1000 50 cents
1001 - 4999 48 cents
5000 - 7499 46 cents
7500 - 9999 45 cents
10000 or more 44 cents

Shipping of course is extra. Doo-hickeys are lightweight and do not cost most to ship. Of course, to accurately calculate shipping costs we would need to know the locations of the destination.

If you are interested in purchasing Doo-hickeys from me, please respond within the next 12 hours. If you do not I cannot guaranttee the pricing and/or handling of this account. Market rates of Doo-hickeys have been increasing of late.

So, Ms. Sam. I wish you luck in your decisions. If you do decide to buy Doo-hickeys from my import company, and you respond within the required deadline period, it will become a possiblity. If not, then maybe I can persuade you to purchase one of our other top products. Legally I cannot mention the name to you at this time, just know that it is a widely popular product that female teenagers are buying up in droves. Every young girl wants one! Girls are cellophaning each other telling them about this product. It is a sight to see. Everyone wants one of these in addition to one of my Doo-Hickeys!

In closing, I wish you Ms. Sam, a very jolly good day. And I hope I hear from you within the alloted time frames mentioned in the above letter. ..

I didn't hear back within 12 hours so I wrote her off, but then today I received a reply from Ms. Linda - here's her reply:

Hello Robert,
Thanks for your fast response,
i will like to order for 5000 pcs and i will like you to kindly get back to me with the shipping cost asap,
Regard,
Linda......

-----------------------------------------------------------

Since she didn't reply in the required timeframe, I replied as below. I thought if they are using a stolen or fake Credit Card they wouldn't want to make a deposit and give it time to clear. Either way, if they do, I'll contact Paypal and let them know about this possible scam and about their use of a possible stolen credit card. That way Paypal can control any payments/credits on their use of that card.

Ms. Sam,

I'm so sorry, you did not respond by the required deadline.

As indicated in my email, you had 12 hours from the time I emailed you that letter. According to my records that letter was sent out to you as follows:

----- Original Message -----
From: O'Tannenbaum's

Subject: Re: Order Enquiry......

Therefore you had until 1:07 PM on Saturday, February 04, 2006. You did not make my deadline. Because of that I released my entire stock of 10,000 Doo-hickeys to contracted buyers.

Now I will be getting another shipment of Doo-hickeys in later this month. If you would like to make an order of 5000, you may leave a fully refundable goodwill deposit at this time. That way you will be first in line to get access to my next shipment of Doo-hickeys when they arrive on the next container shipment out of China.

If you would like to do this, please let me know your mailing address and I will compute shipping costs. Your deposit will be calculated to be 17.5% of your total order. You may pay via your VISA, MASTERCARD or NOVUS/DISCOVER CARD.

Your Deposit will be applied against your total order when shipped. Also if you decide to not go through with your order when the shipment arrives, you may return it for a full refund - minus shipping costs of course. No buyers remorse.

If you would like more information before you purchase, please ask.

Thank you very much. I look forward to doing business with you.

Have a Jolly Good Day.

So, let's see if I can hook her. If she does, who do you recommend I contact, just the Paypal folk? Or the US Secret Service? I hate these Scammers. I want to put an end to their schemes. And if it takes us actively trapping them, I'm all for it.

Re: [Credit Card Fraud] What is this Scam? They w

She's (it's probably a guy, by the way) going to do one of two things. The most common thing to do is send you a fake check that is much greater than the purchase price. You will deposit the check and send "her" the rest of the money via Western Union or MoneyGram. You will also send "her" the goods via DHL/UPS. Two weeks later, your bank will have confirmation that the check is fake.. they will pull the funds from your account and you'll be left with the burden that is paying back the bank.

The second thing is to use a credit card.. a stolen credit card. The con works the same - they will ask you to charge it $500-5000 extra and send the overcharged money to them via WU or MG, as well as sending the goods.

As for busting them - don't count on it. Your heart is in the right place, but it's just not going to happen for several reasons:
a) Government corruption is common in Africa. Very common. This means that most scammers can get away with scamming as long as they pay bribes on time.
b) Scammers - even the rich ones, in most cases - don't have their own computers. They go to cybercafes and scam from them.
c) Scams like these are common in Africa. South Africa is one of few countries in the area that is serious about combatting this type of fraud (»www.419legal.org/) but getting an arrest is not something that happens on a daily basis.

See what they say... if they want to send a fake check, let me know.. I'll find someone who will take it. The best we can do with fake checks is alert the bank so that they know what to expect.

HTH,

I'll let you know if they reply. Right now I'm hoping they'll agree to make a "deposit" of some kind. Credit card or check.

If they do, I'll have to create some sort of cheap "Doo-hickey" so I can be legit myself. Of course I never actually described what they were in my emails to them. They want to buy them sight unseen. Maybe I can purchase 5000 beads at the craft store and call them Doo-Hickeys? Something that may cost me $5 or so. Hmmm or maybe get rice and paint them gold. 5000 grains of gold rice would be cheaper then 5000 beads.

I can also create another product - I did mention another one in my original letter. I can call that one a "Whoozy-what-zits" - an Acne remover for Teenage Girls.

It's nice to see that you've got an interest in scam baiting. You should check out these sites... there are tons of people in the forums who can help you with ideas and such. »www.thescambaiter.com and »www.419eater.com are great places to get started.

Now a question for you - do you want to send this guy a bunch of junk? If so, there are a few things you should know. Let me know if that's what you want to do, and we'll go from there.

P.S. HTH = hope that helps.. not my initials or anything like that.

This could turn out to be our very own version of the
p-p-p-powerbook, if he baits this scammer to such an
extent.

1 edit
P-P-P-Powerbook was very flawed because they used FedEx. Lads will usually pay FedEx with a stolen credit card... by the time the chargeback is filed, the goods are already delivered, and FedEx will come after the sender for the money.

DHL is best because they have a CoD system for countries like Ghana and Nigeria. The scammer pays cash before he's even allowed to look at the box.

Edit: Come to think of it, the scammer never even paid for shipping of the P-P-P-Powerbook. That's lame. We need to make the scammer spend some money!

Yes! Because then future scammers will then be attempting to ensure that they do not have to spend money, thus making things a little more difficult for scammers. Every little bit helps!
