| [Sprint] Can someone explain a little more about tethering?
I was just reading an article yesterday (I could've sworn I read it here, but I can't find it anymore...) about sprint users with the "Power Vision". They are able to tether their phones on their laptop to get an internet connection. Now I'm not looking to do BitTorrent downloads, but it would be nice if I can check my e-mail while I'm in a car, middle of downtown, or something. So does this work on any phone? How exactly is it tethered? Through Bluetooth? Does the Power Vision plans come with minutes or are those extras? My contract is up near the end of this year for Cingulair and I just might switch to sprint... |

I can't answer your direct question, but have you heard of Opera Mini? If you already have vision goto mini.opera.com, if your given a chance to download the java applet this is a special program which will allow you to visit many normal html sites on your wap phone. -- My hourly rates: $25 per hour. $35 per hour if you want to watch. $45 per hour if you want to help. $75 per hour if you tried to fix it, and failed. The biggest error is sitting in front of your keyboard. |

You can get tethered connectivity on most sprint phones, but you can only get broadband speeds on Power Vision phones, which are the newer high-end phones.
Basic service is $25 a month and includes 40 MB of data. Additional data is $0.001 per kilobyte capped at 80 dollars. There is also a plan with unlimited tethered data for $40 a month. This would all be on top of your regular cell phone plan.

Power Vision phones come with a USB cable to connect to your computer. -- "Independent thinkers tend to ALWAYS have someone Not agreeing with them. I don't really know what EVDO speeds sprint has. Btw, those prices are pretty good. Here in Canada unlimited is $100. |

Speeds up to 2.4 Mbps, depending on signal and how much the network is in use. -- "Independent thinkers tend to ALWAYS have someone Not agreeing with them. 1 edit | reply to No Limit I average 500/80 under most conditions, 900/120 with strong signals. I haven't tried it in a moving vehicle yet, only in the EVDO area, but I had great success with the older sprint 1x network with a laptop card. We took a 700 mile trip on I-75 and only lost signal for a few minutes in the mountains of Tennessee.
Ports are not blocked, as far as I can tell. I frequently run into blocking at wifi hotspots, mostly for VPN ports.
Latency is around 180ms, about 100 ms more than DSL. If you use bluetooth and not usb, speed drops to around 200K and you'll use your battery more quickly.
Depending on the phone type, your laptop will charge your phone while operating, a real advantage if you are on for an extended period.
One other nice feature (at least on the PPC6700) is that if you have an incoming call your data service is suspended and then resumes when the call is done. |

| reply to Semi751 Yeah, definitely expect latency. That's just a given with wireless, I think. No gaming, for sure. Its great for downloading files and etc. though. -- "Independent thinkers tend to ALWAYS have someone Not agreeing with them. It's The non-thinkers that ALWAYS come in legions."-John Callari |
