| Let's translate..
Lie #1 : "We have huge issues surrounding how we build backbone facilities and access to the broadband world, and I think Google as well as us and others need to let the markets settle that," he said.
Translation : Oh shit, my dumbass VP opened his mouth, spilled our secret plans to the press before we've paid off enough politicians. We'll need to backpedal cause we're about to be bitchslapped by the government.
Lie #2 : "Telcos like Verizon and AT&T counter that because their networks are just that--their networks--they should be allowed to charge fees for faster access to partner sites."
Translation : Well, sure, we built the networks with guaranteed profits over the last 50 years. And yes, the taxpayers subsidized the buildout at a HUGE cost (very expensive long distance, free access to land, guaranteed profits). Now someone else is making money off it, and WE DEMAND that we get our cut. Hey, the mob does it all the time, why do they get all the special breaks?
Lie #3: "Opponents say that government regulation is overkill and that a free market will help speed up network development"
Translation : Waaaaaah, Waaaaaaaaah.. We don't think anyone should be able to build except us, and we'll sue anyone who tries to. Waaaaah, waaaaaah.. The nasty cable companies have more subscribers... waaaaaah, waaaaaah. We'll fire everyone if you don't give us what we want, like PA did when we SWORE we'd have fiber to the entire state by 2004. Waaaaaaah, waaaaaaaah.. -- Sure the internet has lots of porn and piracy, but I'm sure there's a downside to it. |

| Doesn't vz and mci OWN about 10%(or more) of the internet already through related backbone companies? What does this actually mean? Can cable companies claim the same amount of backbone resources? No, and the result: Throttling, app banning, etc
This doesn't mean that VZ won't lose customers by not upgrading broadband speeds in their most competitive markets, because cablevision matched 'peak' speeds albiet on a docsis modem (shared with limited upstream). Why? Verizon still can't justify not offering VOIP as an alternative bundle with FIOS. Verizon could even *BOOST* the offer by goosing the speeds a touch, an extra 1-3 megabit symmetric to pad the voip line's usage.
A pitbull fight in any ONE of verizon's markets would have the cableco competitior fleeing with their tail between their legs, and that includes cablevision or time-warner. Multiple fights to the death could be a problem, as not even that amount of cash is being spend *ahem* on the war on terror. |

| All I know is that. I've used verizon for 5 years. Every single time I get what is advertised. 3 megabits every single time. I have moved and have tried optimum online and it sucks. In the day time when no one is around it's about 10 megabits. Once it hits around 5 it goes to crap (about under a megabit). Yet they advertise a guranteed speed of at least 3 megabits. Not to mention how tech support loves to state that it's a software problem on my end. Don't be fooled by optimum. It's terrible. Stick with dsl. A dedicated reliable connection. |

...
...because that is obviously bullshit. I have a 3 mbit connection with Verizon in the office which I use to test Verizon's network. Compteition is after all "competition".
I also have a 1.5/384 at home. That connection is impressed upon a frame circuit over one of OUR T-1s to our office and thence to the Internet.
Every afternoon at 14:30 performance on the 3 mbit pipe thru Verizon is showing latency of about 250-500ms and thruput of about 256 kbit/sec. WORD.
Can we say overselling available bandwidth? |

Hmm.. Docsis2 network, 50mbps/5mbps cap is VERY much a reality with a provisioning file change-over. |
