| After 2 yrs with norton..I am changing
I have run norton system works pro for 2 yrs. Bloated and now 33% more, price wise that is. So I finally got it all out of my system...I HOPE I am looking at AV for virus scanner but after trying the free version for a couple of days. I have seen some weird things, especially with firefox. It has actually blocked or made some sites I go to never display. These are normal hardware review sites and a game conference. SO maybe its not for me. There have been endless post about which is better in the eyes of the users and very good talk about all of them. But I need good protection that does not slow down the system and be a memory hog.
AV seemed to fill the bill but after these few weird happenings I am not sure. Is there another free virus checker that I can look at?
ps norton had some worm protection but I don't think it did anything for malware am I wrong?
thanks big time for ideas

| hello "Sparks", i canntell you i quit relying on/useing anything Symantec-Norton since 2003,(started useing it in 1999)and i don't miss itat all, I use ZA & Avast, but one note, DON'T just rely on the uninstaller,I found out through experience & learning that "Symantec /Norton is a stubborn critter, & dosen't like to be removed. make sure (as i did) go to your registry,in both Current Users & Local Machine, and delete/remove EVERYTHING that says either Norton or Symantec. to get all trace's completely off your machine, -- I try to be friends with everyone, wary of a few,& will always be an enemy to some reguardless of what we do |

| reply to sparks Check to see if your ISP provides any free programs. In my case, OOL provides eTrust's EZ AV, EZ FW and/or EZ Armor free of charge to its subscribers.
I use BitDefender 8 Free Edition as my on-demand scanner, but that too does have real-time scanning & updating capabilities, so that might be a possibility for you. -- Life is simply one damned thing after another. |

After hearing a few people say that bit defender was SMALL and didn't use a lot of resources but at the same time it was very good they compared it to NOD and said these are the 2 they have or would get. I wanted to ask NOD32 has a big following here at broadband. Have not heard much about bitdefender. 1 user license of BitDefender 9 Internet Security cost $29.95 NOD32 cost $39.00
I am leaning towards bitdefender will this be ok?
Norton had some things that I never even knew if they worked internet worm protection...always flagged battlefield 2 as a worm, and mail scanning... last but not least...I have dsl with a router do I, should I worry about a firewall?
what should I replace these with ?
again thanks for all your help and advice

| reply to sparks A lot of people like BitDefender, and it is a good program also, yet I didn't like all the reboots it required after certain sig updates - I thought that was unnecessary.
I went with NOD32, and I'm very happy with it.
If you do decide on NOD32, you might want to visit this page »www.wilderssecurity.com/showthre···?t=37509 which will guide you through settings that will give you the best protection from the program even though it is very good "out of the box." |

| reply to sparks Yeah! Cool. I did that long ago and today I am in the process of a bigger step:
After 10 years with M$... I am changing to Linux!
Gee it took me long. Better later than never.
BTW, the best AV are not the ones people mention in here. They are:
MKS-Vir & Extendia AVK
They scored (MKS_Vir 2004 - 321/321 0 Missed - 100% eXtendia AVK - 321/321 0 Missed - 100%) a perfect result in a serious independent test not a PC World kind of test.
Choose: Red Pill or Blue Pill?

G. This test by Kobra was not considered worthwhile because of the very small sample size and therefore is considered an amateur test. Look at av-comparatives or Virus Bulletin for professional test results.
eXtendia AVK either uses a sole, dated KAV engine or KAV/RAV double-engine where RAV signatures are no longer available. So this is not a good choice now.
MKS Vir is relatively new to the American market and again its detection levels are not really known. Further, support for eXtendia and MKS can also be very poor.
Take a look over at av-comparatives for some ideas for commercial scanners and consider Avast as a good freeware alternative.
Good deals at present;
1. Dr Web has a migration license where you are given a 50% discount if you switch from another AV.
»buy.drweb.com/togreen/
2. Or if you like Bitdefender, you can receive a free copy of the full BitDefender Standard 8, with real-time monitoring for 12 months from here; »www.bitdefender.com.au/site/Prod···omotion/ or BitDefender 9 Standard is only $29. |
