Need help networking! HELP! FAST

I just bought a Belkin Wireless Router (F5D7230-4) and tried to install it using the CD. When it searches for the router connectivity, it doesn't find it. It says to call customer serivice and say I have a "Problem Connecting with the Router." However, I called and I was put on hold for WAY to long. My mom's bday is today, and I wanted to burn her a CD, so I need to do this fast! A Belkin Wireless USB adapter is installed on the other computer. Anybody know why it can't connect? Thanks!

Welcome to DSLR Forums. Please consider registering (it's free), so everybody can help you better.

First, please connect to the router using Ethernet, and forget about setup software. Never do wireless setup without an Ethernet connection.
•Making changes to a router thru the WiFi connection will sometimes make the router restart. If you make changes that affect WiFi connectivity, you can end up with the problem that you're having right now.
•You don't need additional software to access a router thru its interface; your browser can do that just fine. Some router setup programs may even install software that you don't want or need. Just run the setup using the router interface, connected using Ethernet.
•And remember to configure security before turning the radio on. You don't need your neighbors leeching your service.
Please read my article for additional information:»nitecruzr.blogspot.com/2005/11/s···essPoint
It's very possible that the radio portion of the router is off until you connect by Ethernet, and intentionally turn it on. That's a procedure that has been badly needed for a long time.

OK, I'll give it a shot.
•Setup your computer as a DHCP client. Check TCP/IP Settings, and make sure "Assign an address automatically" is selected.
•Power your computer off.
•Install the router, and give it power.
•Connect an Ethernet cable to the router, and to your computer.
•Power your computer on.
•When your computer comes up, it should have an IP address, and a default gateway. Run "ipconfig" from a command window, and note the default gateway. That's the address of the router LAN connection.
•Type the address of the router LAN connection into the browser address window, run the router configuration program, and make all the necessary changes.
•You do still have to read the manual that came with the router. It should include a section on using the browser interface, in addition to a section on installing the unneeded router control software. It will tell you the account / password needed for accessing the setup program thru your browser.

Read the cited articles discussing the many settings that you will have to make. The router manual will probably list each one; depending upon the amount of content there, these articles may complement, or may supplement that.

Well, start with more detail than "it didnt work".

Start by providing "ipconfig" from the computer, when connected to the router.

Redirect the output.
•ipconfig /all >c:\ipconfig.txt
•notepad c:\ipconfig.txt

The instructions are in the article:
»nitecruzr.blogspot.com/2005/05/r···ing.html

If we're going to fix this, you'll be spending some time reading my articles, for details like redirecting output. Best you get used to reading the articles, and make it easier on both of us.

Re: Need help networking! HELP! FAST

Click for full size
Click for full size
Click Start > Connect To & select show all connections .

Click the LAN connection icon then select internet protocol (TCP/IP) . You will see a screen similar to the attached image . Make sure its set to obtain ip automatically & obtain DNS server address automatically .

Connect any LAN port of the router via ethernet to your pc's wired network interface card & the routers WAN port to your modem. Plug in the router .

After the routers lights stop blinking go back to the TCP/IP settings on your pc & copy what it says & post it in your next message.

Well, the ipconfig is a start. It shows that you are getting settings from a Knology server.
hunt-server1.knology.net (69.1.30.42)
69.1.0.0 - 69.1.63.255
KNOLOGY Holdings, Inc.
What those DNS servers is questionable.
69.50.188.180
69.50.160.0 - 69.50.191.255
InterCage, Inc.

195.225.176.31
195.225.176.0 - 195.225.179.255
NetcatHosting
Vsevolod Stetsinsky
Ukraine, Kiev
Forget it. Just go to the screen where you selected "Obtain DNS server addresses automatically", select "Use the following DNS server addresses", and enter "4.2.2.1" and "4.2.2.2" into the Preferred and Alternate address boxes.

Well, the ipconfig for the Windows 2000 computer is the same as before, with the wonky DNS servers. No ipconfig provided for the Windows XP computer. The equipment list looks OK - Windows 2000 computer using Ethernet, Windows XP computer using WiFi.

What are you trying to do - share Internet, share files, or both?

OK, knowing the scope of the project is the first step.

Let's get back to the Internet issue. Since I've only seen the ipconfig for the Windows 2000 computer, I can't comment on the Windows XP computer. The Windows 2000 computer looks OK, except it's DNS servers are wonky.

As I listed above
69.50.188.180
69.50.160.0 - 69.50.191.255
InterCage, Inc.
Concord, CA

195.225.176.31
195.225.176.0 - 195.225.179.255
NetcatHosting
Vsevolod Stetsinsky
Ukraine, Kiev
If you're in Alabama, why do you use one DNS server that's in California, and another that's in Russia? You need to verify, with Knology, if they actually set those up intentionally.

Is that the same on the Windows XP computer? Please don't make us guess.

all the other one says is:

Host Name . . . . . . . . . . . . : DELL
IP Routing Enabled. . . . . . . . : Yes
WINS Proxy Enabled. . . . . . . . : No

and its physical address.

right now we dont really need to worry about the xp computer, I could probably connect them as long as we got the computer to find the router, and connect to the internet while hooked up to the modem.

OK, it's your dime.

So what are you doing about your Internet problems? You started with "Need Help Fast!" and "can't connect to the router". Are you still in an urgent situation?

Anyway, I'm looking at the ipconfig, and I can't see how it connects to the router either. That looks like it's connecting directly to the modem, because it's getting an IP address, DNS Suffix, and DNS servers from Knology.

This doesn't make any sense, really. Look at my example Normal IPConfig, with a pair of computers connected to a NAT router (as I'm thinking you should be). See the "192.168.1.x" all thru the list there. That's normal for a subnet managed by a NAT router. Why does your computer not show any of that?
»nitecruzr.blogspot.com/2005/05/r···l#Normal

Verify how the modem, router, and Windows 2000 computer connect. What is the label on the port (connection hole) where each network cable plugs into each of the 3 devices?

Now, none of my articles yet provide any diagrams or pictures of how to do anything. I use words - and lots of them. But look at my Networking article, and follow the references to several good instructive websites for diagrams and pictures. Check out what they have to say, and see if there's maybe some basic mistake that you may have made in your wiring.

Re: Need help networking! HELP! FAST

I finally got a little something yesterday when I hooked up the router and typed in CMD, and IPCONFIG/ALL:

Ethernet adapter Local Area Connection:

Connection-specific DNS Suffix . : Belkin
Description . . . . . . . . . . . : Realtek RTL8139(A) PCI Fast
Ethernet Adapter
Physical Address. . . . . . . . . : 00-40-F4-8D-EA-CA
DHCP Enabled. . . . . . . . . . . : Yes
Autoconfiguration Enabled . . . . : Yes
IP Address. . . . . . . . . . . . : 192.168.2.2
Subnet Mask . . . . . . . . . . . : 255.255.255.0
Default Gateway . . . . . . . . . : 192.168.2.1
DHCP Server . . . . . . . . . . . : 192.168.2.1
DNS Servers . . . . . . . . . . . : 192.168.2.1

Is there a problem with that? I emailed Belkin and they sent a reply telling me what to do. I followed their steps, and I got to the 3rd to last one, which is type in 192.168.2.1 in the browser bar, but I can't because I still don't have internet. Hopefully you can catch what I'm doing wrong!

OK, that shows your computer does connect to the router, and it's getting settings from there.

Now, as Belkin says, you need to login to the router. We know you're connected to the router, cause you're getting settings. You login with "http://192.168.2.1", in the address bar of the browser. You're going to have to do that, so you can get your Internet working.

If that doesn't work, tell us in excruciatingly detailed words, what you are seeing, including any error messages.

Your DNS server looks incorrect . It should be 69.50.188.180 . If it still wont allow you to login try setting the DHCP server to 69.1.30.42 with a DNS server of 69.50.188.180

Also try entering 192.168.2.1 into the address bar without the http

The simplest way to get this finished would be for you to run the Network Setup Wizard, and select the NAT Client configuration:
This computer connects to the Internet through another computer on my network or through a residential gateway.
»nitecruzr.blogspot.com/2005/05/u···ATClient

If you don't want to do that, and considering the amount of work that you've done to date I would understand why you won't want to, let's look at "browstat status" and "ipconfig /all" from the problem computer, and one other computer. Then we'll compare, and change, other settings as necessary. Read this article, and linked articles, and follow instructions precisely (download browstat!):

Sorry to reply so late, I didn't need your last reply because I figured it out right after I posted. Now I have a few last questions.

1. I have an Epson C86 printer on my Windows 2000 printer, and am wondering if you can somehow network it with this new computer without a printer server.

2. Is there are software program or something besides Network Magic that I could use to share my files between both computers? I can't do it by Windows, so I have to do it by a program or if there is a way to do it by the router page. (»192.168.2.1)

Please help me out!

Really? How about sharing what you figured out? That's the polite thing to do.

If the printer is network compatible, you get it working on one computer, set it up to be shared (like creating a file share outgoing), then go to the other computer and add a network printer (like creating a file share incoming).

According to the online web page, the C86 has "network and wireless printing options".

Did you get an owners manual with the printer?

So above you said you figured it out? Now you say that you "can't do it by Windows". What's the complete story?
