[Speed] Reston, Va 16Mb down/1Mb up confirmed.

The 16Mb/1Mb up service is launching this month in the Reston, Va area. I am not sure if this is going to be another month of speed increases though for other areas.

Edit: Attached are the fliers that are heading out in the mail to Reston, Va subscribers. No cost increase for either boost. Current 8Mb subscribers are being boosted to the 16Mb speeds. Current 6Mb subscribers are having their upload boosted but not the download.

That is correct sir.

Same price as Gold?
Yes sir. same price.

The rumor mill here in jax is saying that other areas will be rolled out to 10Mb/1Mb for the gold tier for now though. I think the 16Mb/1Mb will be seen in fios competition areas first. I will post the mailing information later tonight

Was hoping they would go to 1 meg up for their silver tier. I guess I really wouldnt be able to tell much difference between 768 and 1000.

Hell, I'm still trying to find out definite time frames for the rumored 10/1 rollout in Jax. I have pipe envy with people in Va now.

I shouldn't have moved away. My old address in Richmond has FIOS now from what I understand.

Le sigh.

Is there any word on New Mexico? OR, particularly the Albuquerque area?

It would be nice to see a 16mb option. Wow thats a very nice increase for those that have gotten it... Congrats!

Was the rumored 10/1 for gold or silver? (I am having a feeling its for gold (aka the extra $10/mo)).

It better be nationwide!

If I am paying the same price as the people in Reston, Va then we both should be getting the same speed!

I am in Philly bring it on!!

It's only in Reston, Va right now. The rumor mills though are saying 10/1 is going to be the speed boost though this year. I'm not sure if some other areas will see the 16/1 speed or not though. Only time will tell. If this makes a big hit in Reston and makes Comcast a lot of money we -might- see it elsewhere, but don't quote me on that.

What a jip for the people who have 6/384 service. THey should at least upgrade their DL speed to 8/768. But I guess Comcast feels that beating Verizon's FIOS base speed in DL by 1Mb is all that people care about.

Comcast
Top Tier 16/1 $52.95
Std Tier 6/1 $42.95

Verizon
Top Tier 30/5 $179.95
Mid Tier 15/2 $44.95
Std Tier 5/2 $34.95

Even with the increase, I believe Comcast ends up being more expensive than FIOS.

Actually, in Reston, we can get the Top Verizon Tier 30/5 for $54.95.

What better way to test this out than in a market you have to compete with?

Hopefully any problems that come about are learned from when this launches in other areas.

Skorpn,

No word on any other market upgrades. Right now that one Va city is it.

macrospect,

The rumor for the 10/1 is for gold. Silver is expected to follow the same previous boost as it did before and go to 8mb/???. However that's all rumor and of course may change.

pipdipchip,

right now, only that one Va city, there are not any other upgrade plans at the moment.

mpatel,

I think the speed upgrade to the gold tier in that market is more for the people who are willing to switch to the 15Mb/2Mb FIOS plan. Its a similar speed package at the same cost as the current gold tier and it has the same 'cancel at any time, no contract' thing going for it. Plus it would mean you don't' have to spend time messing with anything else other than a power cycle of the modem. Remember, people as a whole are lazy and do not like change.

For the comparable speeds, yes comcast is still more expensive. We will see down the road this year if price will drop(doubtful) or if the speeds will continue to get a boost.

Will they still be limited to 4Mbps/384kbps?
Where's the free speed upgrade for them?

If so, this policy will virtually GUARANTEE a mass exodus by those who do not want Comcast's cableTV to Verizon FIOS.

Comcast's whole attitude toward those of us who don't want their brand of cableTV seems to be evolving to a "if you don't subscribe to cableTV, we don't want you as a customer" policy.

Re: . . . and about the "no cableTV" subscribers?

I do not know if the non TV subscribers will get any type of boost for the standard service. Silver and gold tier subs in Reston, Va will be getting the boosts regardless of other services. Wish I had an answer for the non TV subs though

Also, I dont know what it's like in Virginia, but up here in Massachusetts, if you have the $69.99 bundle package for internet and digital voice you are locked in at 6Mb down. Of course they tell me this after I have already subscribed.

That's odd. Here in Jax if you just have CDV you start off on a cheaper 4Mb speed with the options of 6 and 8 with the $10 boost each step. Don't know whats going on in the local market there though.

As of right now, Reston, Va is the only area getting it. So other FIOS competing areas here on the east coast may not be getting it. Only time will tell here.

im right in between two FiOS zones. south central CT is between the mass. deployments and the westchester, ny/western ct. maybe im lucky. and to california people: i predict this upgrade will be a lot easier because youre on the CRAN now and not on the old ATTBI equipment.

verizon is only catering towards white suburban areas.so theres going to be a long wait if you happen to live in urban citys.if you dont belive me just look at some of the democrats asking the same questions.we should boycott them for doing this.their excuses is its easier to deploy fios in does areas but your telling me they couldnt atleast do some of the urban citys.wake up verizon not all urban citys are wired underground or have only high rise apartment complexs.

White suburban areas? Don't be silly, son. I live in Prince George's County, Maryland. While most (in fact *all*) of the county would be considered *suburban*, very little of the county would be considered *white*. The current FIOS expansion in Prince George's County, MD is in West Allentown/Friendly, an area that is more than eighty percent *non-White*; in fact, less than three percent of the non-White residents of this area are either non-Black, Hispanic-descended or Asian-descended. Basically, most of this area is *Black*. In fact, the one area where FIOS is deployed in the county (greater Bowie) is actually home to more Black residents than White residents. On top of that, Bowie is home to the second-largest historically-Black college or university in Maryland, Bowie State University.

While there are few multiple-dwelling units in either deployment area (and yes, that was indeed a conscious decision by Verizon) that does NOT imply that race had anything to do with it. Verizon does not deploy in MDU-rich areas simply because they have not figured out exactly HOW (let alone WHAT) to deploy to serve the MDUs. That is not surprising, nor, if you've been following fiber-optic deployments (not just FIOS) is that even news.
Verizon is indeed, alive, well, and deploying FIOS in majority-Black Prince George's County, *including* areas where non-Whites and Blacks compose a supermajority of the residents.

ohpleasedude

Re: [Speed] Reston, Va 16Mb down/1Mb up confirmed.

nobody said anything about verizon picking certain race dude .i said verizon just so happens to pick surburban areas that are mostly white.and im talking about my state and lots of others.than you tell me in does areas you talked about how many of does towns have fios that are made up of mostly minoritys.and if you read up some of the democrats in that state question the same thing and they happen be white . so dont even think this is just a minority trying to make excuses.

Makes a lot of sense rolling it out in VA. That was the first area Adelphia rolled out the 16/2.

Also, Adelphia's lower tier in those areas is 6000/768.
Hmmmm.....Coincidence Comcast will be the same?

Here is a link to Adelphia's 16/2 areas: »www.adelphia.com/extreme/where.html

So, if Comcast is following suit, watch these area below.

The Extreme level of Adelphia High-Speed Internet service is currently available in
the following areas:

Leesburg, VA
State College, PA
Mt. Lebanon, PA
Upper St. Claire, PA
Bethel Park, PA
Temecula, CA
Murrieta, CA
