|  Can i get in trouble from the school
At the college that i am currently attending, they have Myspace.com blocked. I don't use their computers but there just a lot of people that are crying their buts off about it and even trying to get it petition for it to get back on. I was going spread the word on how to get access to myspace at school. I know some of you already know that its not that hard but i was just wondering if a school can go after you for doing that? I have read through the college internet policies and so on and i cant find anything stating anything about it. The school didn't block myspace because it was the only thing the students were doing. They blocked myspace because they anticipated that it was going to become a huge thing and they didn't want the students from accessing it. I guess they were right because it became a huge thing. Funny thing is that students are getting caught going on to porn sites. I just think that if i a student is paying for the internet use, they should have access to that too. I hope doesn't become a flame war thanks. |

| Well first I think the rest of us here have every site availible to us, so i would have no idea on how to access it. I guess you could use a proxy server.
Anyways, how is the school going to go after you for something you tell your friends word of mouth? Thats like them going after you for telling your friend how to go 55 in a 25 and not get caught.

well unless i post about it on a different site i don't see any harm there. It doesn't involve messing with any settings on the school computers to begin with. I just want others to be able to have access since we do pay for internet use. |

It's their network and you have to follow their rules, even if they seem excessive.
If you're going to tell people how to get around their blocks, they will be angry. You're telling people how to circumvent security they've set in place.
As far as the punishment, I don't know.

To get around the block you could use a proxy server.
»www.publicproxyservers.com/page1.html
Find a proxy and enter it in the options in Firefox or IE (where it has a radio button that says 'Manually detect proxy settings.")
You will be able to surf freely now, unless the proxy site itself has also blocked myspace.com (pretty rare). |

Why do colleges restrict some websites? Our HS is locked down pretty tight via proxy filter, but college??
Its not like we're kids anymore. We pay for it now!

You could ask why. The only site I've found blocked from my college (the University of Montana) is Montana Tech's website (U of M tech school in Butte). Just asking them it was a "huh, that's odd" and they deleted it from the block list in like two days. |

The main reason it was blocked is most likely the obvious one.
Think about how many students you have? How many machines? How many profiles on myspace stream audio and video? Now think about the Universities connection... an OC-3 maybe? Of course the school is going to block it when the site starts useing a large portion of the schools available bandwidth. I certainly would. Yall argue that you pay for access... but what you pay doesnt even cover the cost of the connection much less the cost of equipment, maintance, the administrator's salaries, etc..
you dont like it? too bad. get wifi and pay for that if you want to go to myspace but quit whineing about "oh i cant visit myspace". You are at school... access is provided for you to learn not for you to simply have fun. It IS their network and they can do as they please. |

YOU pay for the internet connection. There's no reason for them to block myspace unless it is a security issue, which i don't think is the case.

IMO this is not how most Universities are setup; Many universities will act like an ISP to their resnet students. At Salisbury University, we treat our resnet customers like an ISP would...the only thing we block would be p2p because the RIAA has sued and won against a student on our campus, so we dont want anyone else getting harassed by them.
There is a "technology" fee every student pays as well as a housing fee for on-campus students. Of course this alone does not cover the network infrastructure budget, but we also get money from the state and other sources.
I do agree with the portion "it is their network" but even then, its the customers as well. The student is living on campus, the student is paying thousands of dollars to use the facilities and services...without the students there would be no University. So there is a certain degree of freedom that should be expected and the blocking of myspace; I would consider that excessive. |
