From DTVBB's service agreement:

1.4 Required Equipment.
As a part of the Service installation process, DIRECTV Broadband will provide you with certain hardware and software (the "Equipment") that will allow you to access the Service and will support additional services DIRECTV Broadband may offer you in the future. You acknowledge and understand that DIRECTV Broadband retains full title and ownership to the Equipment. You agree to facilitate upgrades of the Equipment and to return the Equipment at your sole expense to DIRECTV Broadband upon the end of the Term, or Termination, as defined in paragraph 3.0, whichever is earlier. If you fail to return the equipment to DIRECTV Broadband within the requisite period, you agree to pay a $499 Equipment Fee, which will be charged in accordance with Section 4.0 below. To receive the Service, you must also utilize a personal computer meeting the following System Requirements:

Looks like whether you think your X2 is worth $500 or $.50, you'll get charged the same either way if you decided you wanted to keep it as a pricy souvenir of your online DSL fun...
