| Nat Firewall configuration for BoLCean Updates?
I installed BoCLean on 2 of my computers, I have it set to do the Automatic updates, but noticed something ... If I have my Router Nat Firewall set to MEDIUM and click on the "check for Update" on the drop list, I get a message that says "DOWNLOAD NOT Available at this time, TRY AGAIN"... but if I have my Nat Firewall set to LOW.. and do the "Check for Update", I get a different message saying that "I am already up to date...Quitting".. I tried to open port 21 as instructed, maybe I did not do it right ( I have a WEIRD Router -Westell Versalink) & tried the Medium again, but still get that "Download not avaliable at this time" message. If it says this, How would I know it receives ANY AUTOMATIC updates. Why am I getting this message when my Nat Firewall is set to Medium? I would like to keep it on Medium if I could, but not sure how to get BoCLean to work properly then. |

| reply to OverRunMama I've never seen that issue with BOClean and firewalls. With software firewalls, like Zone Alarm, you'd need to allow the BOCupdate process to call out, but with the router, it should be fine. You should never have to lower your settings to low, nor should you have to open port 21, afaik.
I'm sure someone here will have some suggestions for you to try, but if that fails, why not email Kevin at BOClean? (I believe it's support@nsclean.com); their support is great, and maybe he has a suggestion. -- The truth of a thing is the feel of it, not the think of it. -- Stanley Kubrick |

| I emailed Boclean like you said. It says this in the online support about Port 21: "If you are using a firewall, you will be alerted to the BOClean update module trying to access the internet via FTP (port 21 on the other end) to perform the update. If your firewall blocks the BOClean updater, then an automatic update will not be possible until your firewall is properly configured, and you may need to do it manually. If you encounter problems updating, contact your firewall vendor for assistance in allowing BOClean to perform its autoupdate. We use "PASSIVE FTP" on PORT 21. "
Maybe some Firewalls need to do this, I have no clue. A very smart computer friend of ours HATED our Router, said it was VERY confusing doing ports etc. I have learned ONLY through trial and error. I guess I did it wrong this time though. |

What I interpret that as meaning is that you have to allow BOC (as I mentioned) permission to access the net to connect to THEIR port 21, not open up YOUR port 21 since you are not running an FTP server.
In my case, for instance, with a regular router and Zone Alarm software firewall, my router allows it, but ZA asks first if BOC can access the net, and I say yes. Are you SURE it is the westell modem/router blocking this and not some software firewall (Zone Alarm, Norton, etc.) you may have?
At any rate, if BOC doesn't have a good suggestion, Norwegian's suggestion of posting in the Westell forum might be a good one!
This may be why many choose to put the westell modem/routers in bridge mode and use a regular router (as I have) . Good luck. -- The truth of a thing is the feel of it, not the think of it. -- Stanley Kubrick |

| It is definetly not the McAfee Router, yes, that screen popped up in both computers asking if it had permission & I gave it -and it allows Full access to Boclean. And again, it HAS TO BE the Westell Router because if it's Firewall is on LOW (with McAfee software Firewall running)--it gives me the message that "everything is updated -quitting", and IF it's Firewall is set to Medium, it says Download NOT available, try again. I have NO inkling what Bridge mode is. ??? |
