Re: Its more expensive than that.....

The wife and I switched from Nextel to Boost Mobile. Our monthly cost dropped from $96 to $14. One need only put in $20 every 3 months, per phone, to keep the numbers active. Same coverage, better phone. We're happy.

Couldn't you get some kind of pre-paid cell phone that would cover you for emergencies, or don't they have that kind of thing where you live? Here I can get a cell phone, just for emergencies for $10/month and it gives me about 40 minutes/month.

And the odds of both VOIP and cell phone going down at the same time are quite remote I think, assuming you have reliable providers.

Wow, I'm paying about $12/mo + fake taxes for just dial tone and an unpublished number (no caller ID, no LD service, etc).

$45/mo is more than I pay for my cell phone.....

I knew it wouldn't take long for this to be brought up. Who would have thought so soon though? Anyhow, $44.61 is what I pay for landline and 1.5/384 DSL service monthly. This price could probably be reduced by going with measured service. I understand people in different places pay different prices, but the blanket statement that DSL is more expensive because you have to have a landline is just false. Period.
damn you guys pay alot over on the east cost. I pay 17 for a landline with 3 cents a minute long distance and 15 after taxes on AT&T DSL. My bill is usually around 35-40 a month.

SBC with all the frills (unlimited long distance, caller ID + 2 other features) with DSL Express came to $67 last month. I upgraded to Pro for $3 more, so it looks like my bill be the equivalent of his with a better service plan. The Earthlink VoIP plus 8Mbit offer (available in a few metro areas) for $70 looks pretty sweet, comparatively speaking.

Oh, that's a tier we don't have here.
There is Expert Plus, which is the same speed, but with 5 static IPs.

It's the $44.95 "grandfathered mistake" dynamic deal from late 2003. They've got it available again for $49.99 though. I have it at the office and at home, and it's sweet.

And yes, my local POTS bill before usage is ~$17 including all the ups and extras:

In that $17 price are you including all the taxes and fees? Because the fees alone on a local line here are in the range of $10-15.
It's just about $17 in my neck of the woods as well including taxes...so for my DSL plus phone I'm paying a total of $50. Usually my phone bill ends up at about $60 with my long distance calls to Europe.

What package is this?

I am not sure what OP is talking about. My total Verizon landline phone bill in Brooklyn is $32-35/month, this includes call waiting and I do use this line for regular local calls too. 3.0 Mbit DSL adds another $32.

For the record: Landline ($17 including fees, taxes and Big Ed's Slush Fund) + 6016/608 DSL ($45) still beats the crap out of what Comcast charges for comparable cable modem service in these parts, and my rate has not changed in over two years.
THat must be the Expert Plus package, which, around CT is $79/mo. You're getting a great deal. Is that with 5 static IPs?

Lets compare both Cable and Telco where I live...

Cable (Comcr@p)
Basic TV $50.45 or Digital $60.40 (+ taxes and franchise fees)
Cable Internet: $42.95 + cablemodem rental $3 (+taxes and franchise fees)
Comcast Digital Voice service is not yet available at the address you entered
Vonage = $24.95

= $130 + taxes/fees

DSL/Telco/Satellite
Telephone Service (incl long distance + local + packages + taxes and fees)
$48/month
Satellilte: DirecTv w/3 sets: $52.16 including taxes/fees
DSL Extreme: 3Mbps/512kbps $32.16/month including all fees

= $132.32 including all the fees/taxes !!!

I'd pay at least another $10/month for franchise fees and taxes to Commiecast.

You pay $45/month just for a dial tone and still have to pay 10 cents per minute for Local calls??? That's just crazy.

Why don't you get VOIP? I have zipglobal and it's 2 cents a minute for anywhere in US/Canada and $3/month. It's gone out like once in the past year.
Trust me I have VoIP! I use Broadvoice as my primary phone and it never runs me more than $20. The landline is just there for emergencies.
LAMO... you're the favourite type of the telcos...
Seriously, nobody in NYC would do the same - this is the place where you can choose between 3-4 DSL package, at least one cable but in many areas two and countless of VoIP...

First, I never said cable was free from monopolistic tactics. Far from it.

However, much like elections on the federal level, we must choose the lesser of too evils. And quite honestly, the Bells have been defrauding consumers and blackmailing government far longer than cable has.

$17 for a local phone line? I wish I lived where you did. Here the cheapest line you can get runs around $25-30 depending on which part of the state line you are on and forget about LD or other bells and whistles like call waiting and caller ID.

In that $17 price are you including all the taxes and fees? Because the fees alone on a local line here are in the range of $10-15.

Oh yeah...cable companies have never defrauded, mislead or fleeced their customers... I feel so fortunate being forced to pay for 190 channels I have no interest in just to get the 10 I do watch. Man, it gives me warm fuzzies every time I open my monthly love letter from Comcast.

For the record: Landline ($17 including fees, taxes and Big Ed's Slush Fund) + 6016/608 DSL ($45) still beats the crap out of what Comcast charges for comparable cable modem service in these parts, and my rate has not changed in over two years.

How about $20 a month for a dry pair DSL at 768/128? Or $35 a month I think for the 3m/768k plan. Add unlimited calls through vonage its about $50 with tax or through sunrocket $42. That's about the same or less than a cable line without TV.

Dont forget to add the cost of the landline also. I have the cheapest package Verizon offers and the phone bill is $45 per month. Add any DSL package and I would be paying almost $70. DSL? FORGET IT, GET CABLE!!!!
maybe if you weren't buying a 'package' try a local exchange plan. usually about 1/8th the price of your 'package'
That is incorrect. I literally have dial tone ONLY. 10 cents per minute for LOCAL, plus a varying LD rate. The worst part is that I only have this landline as a backup in case the power goes out (or 911 is needed), it has never once even had a call placed on it.
I would say it is quite correct. like I said 'usually'; on another note I find your situation absurd, hmmm... now that I think about it, isn't the phone company required to maintain 911 ability on every line, 'current' or not? atleast that is what a phone company in my state told me, when I worked for them.
