As with most of the cable versus DSL debates; this must be looked at at the local level - making sweeping claims about which is better/cheaper is narrow.
I live in QWest territory, who offers naked DSL - sure to get the best rate I need a bundle of services with QWest, but the same is true of the cable (charter) in my area.
So the landline cost argument does not apply to me. -- If it is not recorded, it simply does not exist. |

I cant speak for every market, however there is a strong reason I mention it particular to my situation. Here in NYC, you cant get basic phone service for less than around $40. In this same market however, the difference in price for cable internet with TV versus without is only around $10 (or less). So in my case (and the millions who live around here), there is truly no comparison between cable and DSL. -- Now THATS superfluous!! |

| Fair enough, and NYC is a huge market compared to mine. I don't argue that cable is not the best choice in some or maybe even most cases (I would have to really think about that); I just hate seeing wide-spread claims "cable is the best, Windows is the best, etc." Your statement "DSL? FORGET IT, GET CABLE!!!!" taken in context is probably accurate; I am just pointing out that independent research of local options is necessary before coming to a decision. -- If it is not recorded, it simply does not exist. |

| Oh yeah...cable companies have never defrauded, mislead or fleeced their customers... I feel so fortunate being forced to pay for 190 channels I have no interest in just to get the 10 I do watch. Man, it gives me warm fuzzies every time I open my monthly love letter from Comcast.
For the record: Landline ($17 including fees, taxes and Big Ed's Slush Fund) + 6016/608 DSL ($45) still beats the crap out of what Comcast charges for comparable cable modem service in these parts, and my rate has not changed in over two years. -- Toolmaster of La Grange. |

| First, I never said cable was free from monopolistic tactics. Far from it.
However, much like elections on the federal level, we must choose the lesser of too evils. And quite honestly, the Bells have been defrauding consumers and blackmailing government far longer than cable has.
$17 for a local phone line? I wish I lived where you did. Here the cheapest line you can get runs around $25-30 depending on which part of the state line you are on and forget about LD or other bells and whistles like call waiting and caller ID.
In that $17 price are you including all the taxes and fees? Because the fees alone on a local line here are in the range of $10-15. -- -----»hotcarl.diaryland.com |

THat must be the Expert Plus package, which, around CT is $79/mo. You're getting a great deal. Is that with 5 static IPs? -- Take care,

It's just about $17 in my neck of the woods as well including taxes...so for my DSL plus phone I'm paying a total of $50. Usually my phone bill ends up at about $60 with my long distance calls to Europe. |
